I read of folks training their "war horses". My account is only 20 months, so I am limited in what mount to use.

In UO guide I see they are available for faction silver. Can someone not in factions get one? Also, my Paladin doesn't have taming skills, can he use one, even have it "trained"?

I think the mentioned war horses are the ones from the current event... and you need high taming.

Faction warhorses can be bought by silver... they are tougher than regular horses...

Faction fyi: you cannot be attacked on trammel by opposing factions...

The dread warhorses are the mounts the vanguard controllers are riding. To get one you must have 102 in animal lore and taming.
To own and ride a faction war horse you have to be in a faction and be ranked a 2. Not quite sure how many kills that actually equates to.

If you have bushido on your paladin, then you can have a tamer get u a lesser hiryu for your paladin to ride. He can then be bonded and will help you in the fight.

Since no one has posted this yet, here are some tips on how to obtain the Dread War Horse.

1) Use a Bola to dismount the rider
2) Lure the horse away from the rest of the spawn.
3) Peace the horse
4) Tame it. I have a splendid KR macro set up that repeatedly tames until I get a taming message. You will have to repeatedly peace the beast if you anger it too much.

on a side note:
I've been out of the game since just after the start of the moonglow event. Now I came back, went to moonglow and all there was, was this impertinent guy called Andrew, who killed me after I refused to work for his masters - the audacity!
But to the point: Can anyone tell me (or post a link) what a vanquard controller is, where I can find one and if their horses are any good?

Those are the new invasion spawn.

They spawn on both facets in those towns :
Nuj'elm, Cove, Serpent's Hold, Papua.

The time when they spawn is :
Midnight UO time (buy a clock from a tinker). Which happens approximatively every 2 hours. The spawn is made of 1-2 controllers and the monsters they summon when attacked.

You'd need a Greater Dragon to clean the spawn and a melee/archer character to kill the Shadow Elementals (which take no damages from pets and magery).
