Red face UO for Mac

Why oh why is UO not available for Mac? It's not like the game is so advanced that it would be hard to do. I have a little iBook that would love to be playing UO right now. But instead I have to sit down at a desk and use my crusty old PC.

The only reason I even have a PC anymore for me to return to UO is to test websites on Windows browsers. lol When the one I have craps out on me, I doubt I will buy another one.

Re: UO for Mac

I remember a long time ago there was a webpage devoted to this where you could sign a petition and such despite knowing full well nothing has ever been changed anywhere by signing an online petition.

Anyways, UO was created many years before multiplatform SDKs and such were in as common use as they are now. I would imagine that porting the code over would be nothing short of a nightmare, if not outright impossible.

Re: UO for Mac

Yeah, you're probably right. I remember though a time when UO didn't ever add new graphics, and now there a millions of new graphics all over the place. So the code is drastically different than what it was at inception.
If they can go and make a 3-d client, I am pretty sure they could make a mac client.

But I know it will never happen.

Re: UO for Mac

Many companies have to justify the development costs of a new client vs. percentage of players who will actually use it. If there isn't enough to justify the cost, the project is tossed out. This is the case with the Mac client (not just for EA but other games and applications as well).

On a brighter note... my office computer is a G5 with OS X (Tiger I think) on it.. I installed Virtual PC (XP Home) and UO was very slow to boot.. but ran fine once it was up and running. Problems I haven't fixed yet, UOA loses macros and hot key assignments. UOAM loses link info each time its run. Oh.. and stick a PC mouse on your computer rather than the one-button standard mouse on macs.. reasoning should be obvious.

Re: UO for Mac

Well, I have the mac 2 button mouse, which I love alot. But yeah.
I am running and ibook, which could easily handle UO if it could only run it natively. But I am sure it is not powerful enough to run virtual pc and do anything at all. I know cause I tried.
I would need a ton of ram at the very least.

Maybe when I upgrade to my iMac I can finally do this. (pipe dream)

Virtual PC is a memory hog.. so yah... more memory would do the trick. Not sure if it'll make a difference, but Apple is supposed to start providing the chips for future Mac's soon vs. the current Motorola chips. Its at least a step towards more inter-compatibility. Not as close as the deal back in 1996 when Windows 95 was supposed to be an optional boot option on all new Macs. *laugh* That deal was obviously short lived.

You know what? I remember asking this question of MrTact back on September 4th, 2005 when we did an audio interview with him for 2 hours on .com which is available for download by the way on our website in our Downloads section. If you want to check it out then be sure to visit http://www..com and you can hear the reason given by MrTact about it and hear the entire 2 hour and 20 minute interview we had with him

I think there is a way however to get Ultima Online to run on Linux, so who knows, maybe there is hope?

Re: UO for Mac

Yes I am reviving a very old thread.
Don't hate me.

My main computer is an Intel 20" iMac. I can and do regularly play UO3d (used to) in Windows XP sp2 on it.
HOWEVER I am unable to even install UOKR. I tried back when I had a beta invite, and figured it was a beta problem I have now downloaded and installed the newest edition direct fro EA/mythic and I get the exact same problem.
When I begin installing I get an -6006 error.

Is there ANYONE on the board using bootcamp to sucessfully play KR? OR is there anyone who knows what install error -6006 might mean?

Thanks in advance!

Re: UO for Mac

I've got KR running on my MacBook Pro (Intel-based) using bootcamp and Windows XP SP2. It ran fine, even in beta.

No idea what that error is. I didn't have any problems. Sorry
