UO crashing when switching windows

My client keeps freezing up, and I've decided it's enough of a pain to look into it. It usually does it after I've switched to another window for a while and try going back to it. The whole screen likes to flash a transparent white every so often while playing UO, and when the client freezes it constantly has that transparent white layer over it. It also likes to happen when I enter moongates or portals (the portals that take you out of Melissa's room for example).

I'm on Vista, with Intel Core2 Duo 1.66 processor and an nvidia geforce 8400M GS card.

I didn't see any UO help topics in the tech forum, so I thought maybe it belonged here. Move it if it doesn't, sorry!

edit: also, I have aero turned off. I'm using the basic color scheme

Hi MnF,

How much system RAM and what type? Is this a desktop or a laptop?

Are you up to date on Windows Update? Besides WU, have you checked for component drivers? Aud, vid, I/O chipset, storage, etc.

Gone through all the maintenance? Security (AV/AS) scans, CHKDSK, Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, etc.

I had the same problem with Vista

Sometimes it's just flash that hazy white colour, but sometimes, as you said, going through portals or whatnot the whole client would freeze, I'd get the spinning cursor as if the program was going to crash and 50% of the time it would, the other half it'd come back....eventually.

exactly.

I just updated my graphics driver, and I'm almost positive it's not a virus or spyware issue. I have 2 GB of RAM (plenty, I keep the programs I run to a minimum). It's a laptop. I've got an issue with Windows Updates not downloading at all, so no, I'm not updated there. I haven't defragged in a while. I can try that...

it's either vista or kr, if you use it... vista is giving me so much pain either, and so is kr...

Re: UO crashing when switching windows

I don't know why for anyone else, but... Windows is Windows to me, XP vs. Vista doesn't matter. And at least on my system... KR has never crashed. Not once. Ever.

MnF, WU not working isn't good... need to fix that. Moving on. Are you using Vista or Vista Service Pack 1? If you don't have SP1, there are several MS hotfixes and patches that fixed a lot of graphical issues with KR. Some of those hotfixes & patches were available before SP1, and all of them came with SP1. Hopefully you have those.

Re: UO crashing when switching windows

Well I've tried everything I can think of for Windows Update. When I try to manually install the updates, I get an error saying "Not enough storage is available to process this command." I have 17 GB free on hard drive, and I have plenty of memory unused. I'm posting on some tech support forums to get help with this though (if you have suggestions I'll take em )

There is a difference between Vista and XP, and that's in the resources they use. As long as I've had enough ram to run Vista, I've had no problems with it and don't see what everybody else complains about.

How can I tell if I have SP1 or not?

Right click the My Computer icon on your desktop, on the context menu... left click Properties. On the dialog box, on the General tab, it will display which Vista and which version number.

Hope this helps.

Vista SP1 genearally requires 20gb free (minimum) to install. Try to free up 30gb because some of my customers machines took up 20gb space after updating, some only 14gb.
