Re: unacceptable character names...

Never amazes me after that this conversation, and there have been many, always heads down the controversy road.
Someone always has a "what if" comparison Let's end this hear by just saying that if a name is reported, you'll know fairly soon if it's considered unacceptable.

And Merc so you know, your First Amendment rights of free speech do not apply inside the game or on privately owned message boards.
Just a point of information

All also please rember if something seems controversial in a thread, treat the other users with respect even though you totally disagree

Re: unacceptable character names...

I wouldnt be worried about it Pig, the door only swings one way when it comes to allowable sarcastic sexist commentary.

For instance in my works we sell calenders saying "Boys are Stupid", or another one (anyone else seen the Retro Spoof ones?) with twelve sarcastic things putting men down in a "joking" way. The equivalent calenders for men are for the "boys are stupid" non-existant, and for the Retro Spoof one about how awesome alcohol is. The only thing I find offensive about these kinds of jokes isn't that women can call men pigs, its indeed that men can't call women bitches in the same manner.

But then its all part of that big "Equality! Except when we don't want it!" thing alot of women appreciate and use in western society.

Re: unacceptable character names...

Oh I completely agree, I'm not trying to cause controversy at all, that is why I added an edit to my last post so that it wasn't viewed that way. I personally was just trying to point out both view points, in that I first was attempting to show why the name would be perceived as offensive through examples, then I brought up that whole 1st amendment stuff to show how you could also make an arguement that the name should be allowed. You are right, however, that if someone finds the name offensive, and reports it that it could be deemed illegal.

edit: just another edit to throw in for some food for thought. Recently on atlantic a very well known tailor had to have his name changed because it was viewed as illegal. The guy used the name "the dev team" for his tailor, and a lot of people wear his armor, but he was told to change his name. So although this name isn't really offensive, it was deemed illegal by the UO staff, which I think is fine. It's just another example of how some names can become illegal for whatever reason they so choose to use.

edit2: nevermind that initial edit, I found out that he got banned for allegedly trying to convince people that he was actually part of the dev team and thus using that influence to help sell his stuff. Personally, I dunno why he would do that cause he made some great barbed gear that I would've bought regardless of his odd promoting strategies. My apologies for going a little off topic with these last two edits, haha.

I was going to say, I was surprised he lasted that long with the name. Using that kind of name has been tried and corrected since October 1997

Short, normal, truthfull answer from most men would be...no, not offensive. The normal (not looking for conflict) person would see it was joke, whether it was funny or not, and treat it as so.

I didn't take it that seriously. And yes I have the name "menarepigs" still. We all have different levels of gameplay and our chacter names show it. Some like me want to just go and kill while others want to be more serious on living the life. I was just trying to find out if I was off base with the name and it is obviously no. Thanks.

Re: unacceptable character names...

Honestly, I think your name is fine, but if enough people page a GM on you saying it is offensive, I could see the GM staff requesting you to change it, or changing it for you.

Re: unacceptable character names...

People have to relax in general.

Im thinking that the person in question didnt page. I would hope that if they did page, they get a mark on their acct for wasting GMs time.

That is not the same thing and you know it.
Just to point out that !!!!! is the term used to refer to female dogs...as is !!!!!!! in reference to a male dog. Thus I am sure Merc was using the term in this context not the curse context when he was trying to make his point.

Edit: I guess I can't use a "curse" word when I post and they get changed to !!!!!.
