Stygian Abyss? ~ Main thread

taken from Thread :- Stygian Abyss? found in UO.UHall kindly sent into us by Dolphoenix [ many thanks ]

Kingdom Reborn and information of a following package were shown in a Japanese official page

###########################
Interesting.........

I'm gradually trying to translate portions of the product summary for Stygian Abyss, and it includes these very interesting lines:

Quote:
gargoyle family returned to sosaria
and
Quote:
The new race where the player is selection possible: Gargoyle family
Looks like Gargoyles are the new playable race [wink]

As for the Stygian Abyss, it's hard to tell - it almost seems like Kingdom Reborn is the name of the client, while Stygian Abyss is the name of the expansion that comes with the client. The text makes reference to the Extended Edition of Kingdom Reborn.

Oooooh, and check out this screenshot:

("The screen shot is something which is in the midst of developing.")

Also, don't quote me on this as I'm trying to interpret translated text, but it sounds as if the new client will include a "classic interface" option.

I hope the new race are Gargoyles! Even if not, anything would be better than Dwarves...

"Hi ho, hi ho, we'll not be in UO..." [smirk] [mad] [laugh] [frown] [crazy] [shocked] [tongue]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Basically it's an expansion like UOML, from what this says it will be a few months after UOKR, and only UOKR clients will be able to play it. And it will add Gargoyles as a new race.
This means that gargoyles are NOT the new race in UOKR...
looks like we're gettiing Dwarves with UOKR, and a few months later we're getting Gargoyles...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My shot at making sense of it -

Ultima Online Stygian Abyss
Product summary

“The expansion is the first extended edition of the game after the starting of the "kingdom” service and is due to appear several months after it's release. It is scheduled later to be added to UOKR game boxes and also downloadswill be possible. Furthermore, The Stygian Abyss expansion will require UOKR to be installed”.

Advanced Capability and contents

Having been slaves for several hundred years within a severe land they escaped from, the gargoyle race(family) returned to Sosaria. And, unfortunately, with their return a portion of that severe land was brought to Sosaria. The Stygian Abyss opens, and there inside one will see and mysterious living things which are not accustomed to seeing walking the ground. But, in a place where there is a danger, there is also reward. The Abyss offers treasure above imagining to the person who has the courage to enter.

Anew playable race is available for selection : The Gargoyle Race
They appeared in a portion of the Ultima III story, and this is known by the fact that it has the ability to control, fill , or to convert energy, being mysterious, the are considered an immersive race.

The largest dungeon in UO history: The Sygian Abyss
The Gargoyle Race passed throught the Abyss in order to return from the underworld. The dungeon is several times the width of other dungeons when compared with dungeons currently in UO. The dungeon offers various dangers and, offers new monsters, new treasures.

--PS I'm not so sure that's daemon holding the sword.. what if it's one of the new gargoyles?

This has to be the worst screen of KR I've seen yet. It pains me to know that they're "phasing" out the 2D client.

Re: Stygian Abyss?

Doesn't that screenie resemble the 3rd level of covetous a little too much? It's practically the same thing, LOL.

edit: Oh and I thought the stygian abyss had more to do with dwarves than gargoyles? I could be wrong cause i'm not really familiar with UO lore, but that was what was told to me. I think it'll be either dwarves or gargoyles, but they'd probably try to hint more towards the one that it's not so that they can still surprise us

That is indeed Covetous, with random monsters in it. Not the Stygian Abyss, in case anyone is wondering.

Nope. That's the Orc Fort west of Britain. that stuff has always been there.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HAH! I TOLD YOU IT WAS COMING! Finally! For once I predict something correctly!
But finding out we're getting Gargoyles too.. THAT I couldn't have expected!
I feel kinda bad for the devs tho... i'm sure this was supposed to be held to be revealed worldwide at the townhall... :\
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There's a LOT more goodness in that screenshot than the guy sitting on the bed (though that's cool).

Look where the house sign is on that house

Look how the foundation is cut away and there is a garden growing up from the lower level (where the foundation is cut away)

Look at the shrubbery lining the "yard" on that house.

It definitely looks to me like we'll be getting more options with house deco when KR comes out.

...
I'm still excited about that client subnote that we roughly translated from Japaneese. I wonder if that means that only the new client will work in the new area or if it means that only the new client will work on UO and it'll have a "classic mode" for people who prefer the old look/feel of UO. If the devs did that, it would simultaneously break all of the common scripting and hack-based cheats in the game. A UO without scripting would be SWEET! A UO without people exploiting systems by using cheats will also rock. It kinda kills your immersion when the guy next to you does something that is obviously not possible without cheating (like back in the day when a friend of mine and I; both avid pks at the time got jacked by a guy that was triple casting ebolts)

I'm so excited abou KR. I can't wait to hear more about it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ha , Do I smell some kind of spin control coming soon from Jeremy or Sanya ( or any other dev).Any rate someone let the cat out of the bag , but he's in Cali
Only question I have is this the Japanese only version , maybe we won't see some of those features.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Smart move on EA's part I reckon

I imagine the scenario was something like this: Development on UO:KR was going well, but it was both over budget and behind schedule. By splitting it into two parts, it means not only will we get two polished expansions (rather than one rushed, buggy one), but EA will probably make substantially more money for their product

So, wins all round then.

(reposted for everyone's convenience)

Hey, all, here's the deal:

The Atlanta Town Hall meeting was intended to be the big reveal for all these details. (We're doing a huge press event as I type this, but the press was not going to use the info until next week.) The info going up on the Japanese page was the result of a miscommunication - I'm bummed our thunder was sort of stolen, so y'all who are coming to the meeting - act surprised when we announce stuff, ok?

Because we had no intention of releasing this info to the community this week, we're not prepared to answer questions or release further info right now. We'll be showing the stuff on it detail in Atlanta - so show up there, or stay tuned for reports!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah...whoever went digging around the Japanese sites should be shot! It was supposed to be a SURPRISE!!! Geesh....some people...*shakes head*
Still very exciting news...I am already in deep reading on the Dwarven race...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So there is the latest posted on the thread.I doubt much more will be posted during today [ my time] but Im sure there will be more to come in the next few days so keep checking back here

source Stygian Abyss: Gargoyle Concept Art Images found in General News

I don't know about all of you, but I've been waiting to play a Gargoyle for almost 15+ years now, ever since they were first introduced in the Ultima Prime single-player games. With the day finally being here, I feel like my head is about to explode with Ultima-ness! So if you are in the same boat, then I'm sure you are dying to hear and see as much about them as possible. So far all we have is a few images, but they are enough to let us know that EA/Mythic means business. Here's a sneak peek of some Gargoyle images to give you an idea of what you'll be seeing and reading about in the coming months:

Re: Stygian Abyss? ~ Main thread

taken from Thread Stygian Abyss: Gargoyle Concept Art Images in UOHall

###########################

I often feel rediculed as a female, when I look at clothes and armor like that. I feel treated like a sex-object by the males. I do not want to wear clothes like that, and I do not want to have a muscular male character with the posture of a superhero either. I personally prefer a flat-chested character covered in shiny platemail or elaborate robes, covered with glinstering ornaments, all of which covers my character from head to toe. I loathe "armor" which sole purpose seems to be accenting feminine features so male players can drool over it.
I love the buildings. Their architecture includes features from Mayan, Incan, Egyptian and Persian civilizations, which are amongst the most interesting in Earths ancient history, in my opinion.

I really, REALLY hate the fact that the gargoyle female artwork has breasts and a bellybutton. I'm female in real life and I'd love to have a sexless or at least androgynous-appearing character. But games often depict females as extremely-well-rounded, and have armour matching that (armor for males looks drastically different then armour for females, while apparantly offering the same protection). Let me illustrate with an example from Guild Wars, as they're very extreme in this, even more so then WoW with their open chest-revealing female platemail.

############################

Oh YEAH!!.Give me boobs and a bellybutton and wild crazy hair.The Gargoyle's look like they have hair ? I have waited a long time to play this race.A big reason thats bringing me back.

############################

[i] Awww! They look sooo awesome!
*is all excited*

But.. uh... I would be very happy, if some more natural skin colours, like brownish, greyish, black, would be added. I mean a pink gargoyle...lol.. come on! That would be something similar like a pink dragon! *points down*[i]

############################

- Very impressive.

I can't wait to see the game versions.
Here's to hoping our art maestros hook us up well - cheers.

Yeah - I quite enjoy the Garg architecture as well. Lots of various cultural things to draw upon in its creation.

Love getting my paws on Garg stuff as you can guess.

I'm guessing we won't be seeing any gargoyle footwear with UOSA .

I finished 14 or 15 additional foot concepts just last week, so its still too early for anyone to know one way or the other.
So keep posting all those thoughts on Gargs.

Thinking about all the possiblities makes me go crazy -er, uh more so. -

############################

Although I like the concept art a lot, I'm finding it a little difficult to imagine those feet in motion - they look a bit like clawed snowshoes - I would have expected raised heels so the weight rests more on the toes?

Something we missed out on with the ML elves was getting a sense of their history and culture - they had no books, no historical monuments (aside from the unmarked statues). Despite the time I've spent in heartwood, I never got the feeling that it was a distinct culture - it was more like a slightly more sophisticated corner of Yew. When a new culture is added to the game, I'd like to see more history told within their lairs. The gargoyle buildings make me imagine halls with carvings along the walls that tell the history of their culture. Given the stonecrafting skills, I imagine great rows of historical figures (perhaps with room to add statues of distinguished heroes in the years to come)

As for gargkitty ... I'm caught between wanting to see a towering peerless monster or a little one-slot pet ... or perhaps just some huge statue in an old ruin, hinting at a beast at the center of some ancient gargoyle mythology

Thus the good cat was sent into do a stack of detailed drawings of different feet and how they'd work. Putting all my olde' zoological veterinary studies to good use.
