reminder of why i play... short story

Would like to share an experience that reminds me of why I stick with UO.

I have ridiculously slow remote dial-up so things are unbelievably laggy in towns, high traffic/activity areas, housing areas, etc.

Therefore I just don't go to things like the 'halloween' spawn in Luna.

Of course, I have to check my vendors and use my crafter to do it, completely forgetting that it's in the spawn area just outside of Luna's entrance.

By the time the normal slow loading of houses takes place, my crafter is dead thanks to the swarm of rotting corpses spawning right there.....
GRR, needless to say I was more than a little PO'd.
'usually safe area' + 'crafter carrying pack full' to check vendors = 'no need to insure armor etc', lol.

Several minutes went by as I wandered trying to find a wandering healer, Luna just to laggy to venture into...

I gave up looking for healer and started back to vendor house to log there dead until spawn was done when someone came from a nearby house and rezzed me. He then proceeded to help me get back to the vendor house, which meant a couple more deaths on his and my part. Corpse was gone of course by that time, but items were replaceable or remakeable.

Sometimes I get involved with what I'm doing and forget one of the main reasons I play UO, the interaction with other great people in game. The experience started out negative, but a stranger putting themselves in harms way to help out meant a lot and I am glad to have met him, ending the experience on a good note. Thank you for reminding me of why I play.

Good story.

I remember the times when people like that still played the game. Its ashame that they are few and far between nowadays. Its good to hear that they are still around.

Its easy to forget about community in the game but even more amazing is watching other's expressions when you offer them assistance. On my nightly tromps into the lower levels of a dungeon to train.. I usually walk all the way through the upper levels stopping to heal less experienced players while they train as well. Every once in a while hand out a rez.. they're almost always surprised that somebody actually lent them a hand.

Sad thing is that it didn't used to be that way.. nobody was self-sufficient years ago and either depended on each other, or ran from each other depending on the circumstances. ;)
