Hi all -

I have 2 plants (snowdrops) that were mothers to plain poppies. (They were cross-pollinated with campion pollen). They grew all of their poppies seeds. Yay!

Question:

If I store these live plants to be pollen donors, will the pollen they produce be for snowdrops? Or will it be for the poppies?

Its been so long I don't remember. There is a chart on stratics some where and i'm sure Kellen can help.

I use the celtic moon tables for figuring out stuff. I think if you save the snowdrops to xtype to other snowdrops, it will produce snowdrops. If you xtype them to poppies, you'll get campions. Just depends on what you cross them with. Here is my favorite plant site:

I understand the crossing process. I already used these snowdrops in a cross. I took campions and pollinated the snowdrops with campions, so the snowdrops produced poppies seeds. That part is done.

Where I'm confused is - even though the snowdrops produced poppy SEEDS, will they also produce poppy POLLEN? Or does their pollen remain snowdrops pollen?

(ie. should I keep these snowdrops as future snowdrop pollen donators, or throw them out because there's no way to indicate/remember that they are now poppy pollen donators?)

I think Snow Drops always will give Snow Drop Pollen, unless its been cross pollinated. I thought once it was, it can't be used again? and it puts a little line in it that option so it can't be used again? Does that make sense? So if its been crossed pollinated its only good for those 8 seeds. If it's not been cross pollinated, just used to give off pollen.. then it still gives its original pollen. It has been years since I did this, so take it with a grain of salt!

There's no line through the pollen box, even though I have already gathered all of its seeds from it. It WAS cross pollinated too. That's why I am confused

From the mechanics of the pollen box, it looks like it can still be used as a pollen donor. So, I want to make sure I know what kind of pollen it is, so I don't accidentally use it to create the wrong plant!!

I think you should just experiment and then make a challupa bearing plant for Dip and myself!
