On Judging Difficulty Levels

One of the strengths of Ultima Online is that it does not usually force players to take a difficulty level that they do not enjoy. On any given shard of about ten thousand people, those who never want to leave a guard zone don't have to leave, and those who find mongbats challenged can fight monsters of that difficulty, while those who like paragon balrons can fight those.

Background:
I happen to have 24 mostly very well developed characters on LS plus a few on other shards, with many variations several templates, so I know empirically that the same player can find the same monsters easy or difficult depending on the character template and gear. My warrior Bhima, for instance, struggles with one fighting one revenant Lion, while my warrior Forson can fight three at a time and not bat an eyelash.

I also spend a lot of time with new players or with veteran players who either have not yet or will probably never memorize fifty different keys they can type without looking to fling spells around and chuck skills around effortlessly.

Comment:
People often forget that the same things that are easy for them are difficult for other people. Killing a deer with a runic beetle may be easy to them. Or using peace on a monster that is attacking may seem easy to them.

But there are people who do not find these tasks easy, certainly not effortless.

People must resist the urge to think the whole game must be built around their perceptions of hard or easy because hard or easy is not objective, it is not universal. And to force difficulty levels on everyone based on one perception is to eliminate the best strength of Ultima Online.

Final side note:
I am very, very protective of people who cannot defend themselves, and I do not pull any punches on people who do not pull punches. I only treat civiility with civility, but do not treat aggressiveness with civility. If anyone ever finds themselves subject to harsh words from me, please note the hard words are directed to the aggressiveness and not the poster, as I do not even look at the name of the poster on harsh words but only ever speak to the words.

If you mean the one that ended up being locked ... then ... best to leave it alone ...

As a non fighter, who runs mercifully from anything that looks mean, I'm glad there are folks who understand that not everyone wants to slash, hash, and bash in UO ... but I bake darn good cookies though!! :cheesy:

Re: On Judging Difficulty Levels

Yeah, I make a post about annoying PVM habits with no reference at all to any particular individual, and this complete stranger runs in screaming "OMG U INSULTED MY MOTHER" and gets the thread locked. Then he cranks out another thread for the express purpose of evading the lock and carrying on with his point, and I get a warning for telling him nobody cares.

Re: On Judging Difficulty Levels

The reason it was locked is because it was heading in a bad direction and was cut off before doing so. The reason you were warned is because that is not the attitude this forum portrays. This is a close knit group and posts like that are not welcome or tolerated here..
