Re: Old school UO?

Have you tried role playing? THAT is another game. No magical armour, just plain GM made, no magical items whatsoever! And fun battles, mostly quite big, that we organize, with history, lore and background stories and everything

I agree with you, but it seems to me like UO has slowly evolved to copy all of the new games that are out here now.

Back in the day, UO was the standard for the MMO market, but then EQ came out, and AC and DAoC came out, and they were completely different games.

UO continuted to thrive for a couple years, but then the changes started. The first changes were meant to make things easier for the newbie population, but they really pissed the veterans off and as a result, a lot of veterans left UO.

What the developers never realized is that the newbies are much harder to please than the veterans. There will always be new newbies, and they will always want things to be easier and easier. The veterans, however, are just that. They have been with the game for a long time, and so one could say that they are pleased.

UO took a turn for the worst, in my opinion, when they put the interests of the newbies ahead of the interests of the veterans.

This would have worked, except there are better games out there for the newbies to play now (such as wow), whereas there are certainly not better games for the veterans.

If UO had kept their game, or at least kept ONE server out of the many that are online, with the old ruleset and old server style, I believe that server would be full with veterans who have tried these new games, and become tired of them, and yearned to go back to the old days of UO.

In fact, I would wager that such a server would be so popular that it would become over populated and a second or even third, similar server would need to be opened up.

I don't want to role-play. Especially not if everyone else is a 1337 d3wd with blue and silver and purple weapons that shoot glowing arrows lol.

For the record, I have tried it, and I hated it.

Seriously, can it really be THAT hard or game breaking for the devs to open up a single shard with the old style rules?

Back in those days, UO was the most popular MMO on the market. You really have to ask yourself, what happened? Refer to my previous post for my explanation.

That's the point mate. There are no l337 d3wdz shoting blue arrows with silver hair.. or whatever. As we're in trammel no one can go d3wd on us. The Europa RP community has strong rules about what applies about most things, to make things equal and to maximize fun. We only war guilds with the same rules.

And I'd say it depended on what guild you were in and what way you tried it in. You should give it another shot! With Cove!

All the games have similarities to one and another, which is placing the consumer in the midsts of a fantasy world. I am a veteran player and returning back to an ancient ruleset, plagued by lag, and gangs of malcontents. Creating an old style ruleset server again would only be time and resources. Siege Perilous is there for those wishing to play on that "old style ruleset" where the strongest survives. Som times its just best to move on and forget the past and play those games that make you happy. if none make you happy, find something else to do.

I dont think you understand. I don't want to group up in trammel and decide when to have a staged battle.

Thats like comparing the staged battle of gettysburg to the real thing.

I want to run around PKing everyone I see, except for those people who's respect I have because I know they are indeed better PvPers than myself.

I'm talking about player skill here, not staging battles and role playing. I'm talking about what UO used to be.

Siege would definitely give you pvp. Whether its an rper or pvper, they will both will send you seeing grey.

Re: Old school UO?

Well if it's running around wanting to kill every mother you see I guess it's not for you. Staged battles are less common than spontaneous raids though. You'll find the most skilled pvp'ers in RPvP, as it's another game. Depending on how you define skill, the skill of how much gold is poured into your character or -your- actually skill in killing someone else. I've seen so many "d3wdz" on ethy's and expensive magical armour getting killed by Role players it has become a bit boring.

Gear aside... I used to run around on my mage naked with 50 of each reagent and kick plenty of ass.

I believe it takes far less skill to fight in a staged battle where you know when and who you're fighting than to run around, never knowing when someones gonna teleport in and gank you, or who you're gonna have to fight.

Staged battles takes the adventure out of it ...

Re: Old school UO?

Good times Brett. Did you use to play with a guild? Do any of your old friends still play UO? I think I always found that it was the people I played with that made it fun, and adventurous.

I am a 6+ year vet and was around before Trammel came out. I did have a lot of friends who didn't like the changes and some left, but almost all came back and stayed in Fel.

I personally like the changes, yes the game has changed, but thats what keeps it from getting stale I think.

Maybe you should test out Siege. I believe Se'an Silverfoot plays that shard, perhaps he can give you some input on what its like.
