Old player returning.

Hello, I have recently decided to try this gem out, and let me tell you, it isn't easy...at least not as easy as I had expected.I am a veteran to many MMO's including everquest and many others after that, but this...this is the hardest to get started/learn that i've run into. Now, I played it for a short, very short period of time a long time ago (shortly after everquest came out). I have recently been interested in it and am finding myself confused on some things. Mainly getting started, what classes or skills I should focus on in the beginning, I really want to tame a dragon some day. So that is essentially my goal I guess to be a tamer, but what should I work on while I am skilling up as that.

Some additional questions, to hopefully make the new player experience go a little bit easier.

Are there any performance tweaks I can do to make the game run smoothly? Or at least a guide out there that includes this kind of information.

If I download kingdom reborn is there any way to use the old client if I so chose, I downloaded kingdom reborn and played the 14 day trial and am currently looking to buy/download mondains legacy, so do I need to install that on top of KR?

Also while I was playing on the trial I found the game kind of ....laggy, not really the right word, sometimes if I casted a spell it would kind of lag, moving around was a bit slow like it would hitch every few seconds.

At any rate I'm very interested in this game, I liked the skill based system, especially the idea of taming, but never really got to high in anything since the game lacked in performance back then for me.

Any way, I look forward to your replies.

I can't really help there. 10 years in this game... and I still don't have a tamer! Shusssssh... don't tell anyone, it's a secret.

Just the usual of a well running and maintained PC.

You can have both clients installed at the same time, and switch between the two as needed/wanted. You can download the 2D client here. If you already have an account with KR, that account will work with 2D just fine (accounts are not client dependent).

KR can be a little laggy, but it depends on many different factors... like your PC's configuration & maintenance, having the latest Windows Updates & hotfixes, having the latest patches for KR (it auto-updates). And keeping in mind that KR still isn't fully optimized & is still a work in progress... there are still a lot of systems within KR that the UO Team is still working on for that client.

Others will have plenty of suggestions too. Hope that helps.

Also the current phase of the moon and the alignment of the planets.
Well... perhaps thats a small exaggeration...

Re: Old player returning.

Thank you all for the suggestions and the welcome. I like to think that I am fairly good with PC's and keep mine fine tuned I have autoupdates turned on for every wednesday at 3am, but I know this doesn't get those optional updates all of the time.

Here are my specs

I run windows vista home premium
CPU: Athon 64 3500+
2 gig ram
geforce 8800 GTS
motherboard is MSI K8N Diamond

I usually have the latest drivers or at least one driver earlier for most of my hardware. I read a thing on the internet that said the music in UO can cause some hitching, is this still the case? I did find a download to the 'legacy' client, so I went ahead and got that and installed it I will probably get ML setup today and give the game a fair chance, I don't think I gave it a fair chance during the 14 day trial because I was feeling overwhelemed with all of the complexities of starting out.

There were a few things I read for getting started out, make a money maker to begin with, either a wood worker of some sort (capentry or bower) or a blacksmith/miner. I'm not much of a crafter since in most games, like vanguard or everquest(1 and 2) and others it has been a massive boring grind, so im not sure if I am in favor of making a crafter here. I also read that paladin is probably the easiest and cheapest to start out with.

As far as that goes, I will check the links posted here and when I have more questions, which I am sure I Will, I will continue this thread, or hopefully get some answers in game *smile.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Old player returning.

Hi, I'll add my welcome back to you aswell, i recently came back to the game aswell about 6 months ago after a 2-3 break on other games, I've been playing UO for about 9 yrs now and when I returned it was like starting again (aprt from having a couple of GM chars ).

It's kinda mind blowing when you look at the skills and new options availabel to you but if you have an evening to just sit and really look around at the new stuff it will make sense, I guess you probably know but one of the best sites is www.uo.stratics.com there is a ton of info on there.

Also I always mention to people that I play on Europa and my ICQ is on my profile here, so if your on Europa feal free to give me a shout and we can meet up, I'm more than happy to help with anything I can and give you access to my house for some shelter.

Good Luck,

rgds
