The newest version is Kingdom Reborn and that is a 3d Like game. I think its only available for download online. You can also buy the UO the 9th Anniversary edition in some bargain bins at the game store.

Re: Old and New in UO, need help

Ahem... the "newest" is technically UO: The Ninth Age. That's the most up-to-date you can find in stores. The second newest is Mondain's Legacy.

KR is an independant "3D client" which still runs shoddily on most computers. So if you want to play UO, get ML or 9th Anniv. If you want to beat your head against a wall in frustration, get KR.

I'm pretty sure you can still dowload ML off of Fileplanet. Give me a sec. Oh! Oops! It's Direct2Drive. Still looking up the game there...

http://www.direct2drive.com/271/prod...egacy-Download

You guys trying to chase people away from UO by only offering links to KR or something?

Anyway, a lot has changed since Ren. To cover only major stuff (excluding the item changes and things of that nature), they introduced three new facets, each selectable from the public moongates: Illsh, Malas, and Tokuno Islands. They redrew the 2D map to make it more compatible with KR. The coolest thing was last year winter (2006), they changed the map so practically everywhere you looked, there was snow on the ground. I'm pretty sure this lasted a month.

Oh, and before I forget, they also updated the Trammel/ Fel maps by adding new dungeon and an elf city called Heartwood (the portal is in Yew town). And, well, anyone else notice that they actually redrew the maps of Tram and Fel previously for the Lord Blackthorne's Revenge client? Ever since then, the buildings got shorter and UGLIER.

So... the breakdown is:

UO Ren: Trammel and factions introduced.
UO Third Dawn: 3D client released, new land of Illsh only explorable using that client.
UO LBR: Lord Blackthorne returns as a cyborg dude, they sell RL toys sculpted by Todd McFarlane. We actually had a freaking plot back then! Yay! (Maps redrawn so that 2D client could explore Illsh.)

UO Age of Shadows: The skies opened and a huge storm of crap rained on the game. New addittions like BODs, stat-based armor, new weapons and armor... two new playable skills: Chivalry and Necromancy. AND Spirit Speak finally became useful. Malas is born. Thus also is the huge shopping mall of Luna city.

UO Samurai Empire: New continent of Tokuno Islands, addition of Samurais and Ninjas.

UO ML: My second favorite upgrade. Elves become a playable race.

UO KR: The GOOD 3d Client (Third Dawn) is discontinued so this crappy one can take over.

No, I just thought you had to BUY the 2d Version, I didn't know it was available for dl.

Well, you still gotta "buy" the ML download. It costs $29. So, really, if he can't find Ninth Anniv. in a game store, his best bet is to get the ML download.

Re: Old and New in UO, need help

To clarify some mixing of Clients and Expansions:

KR is simply a client! You can choose which client you want to use 2D or KR. But if you want to access the additional lands, skills and items, you still have to buy ML or Ninth Age, no matter what client you use.

Re: Old and New in UO, need help

And you can still get the 2d client for free, (as mentioned above if you want the things in the ML expansion - Elf characters, some building tilesets, some craftables, access to the new 'peerless' dungeon areas - you have to pay). There is a large amount of patching to go through (but still in total less than the KR download and patch, I think) from ONE of the links on

http://www.uo.com/demo.html

The 'live' one is Fileplanet, you can register there for free - it's just not very clear on their pages - but read carefully, disregard the first things they mention about 'monthly subs'.... they are just trying to 'encourage' paying customers, it's not actually necessary. Ignore the Gamespot link, that gets you to a page saying the offer is closed.

Edit - And based on one of the latest FoF answers, you'll also not have access to the Samurai Empire stuff (new lands, armour, weapons and craftable deco, house tiles, bushido/ninja skills) either :

"The trial code on the KR page only offers AoS content, by the way - SE items and lands and ML items and lands won't be available."
