Not... entirely... what I was thinking

But I'm talking about rendering 3D models into 2D textures, which are then rendered to a 2D monitor but a 3D engine... With words...

Hmm... Lets see...
The process starts off with highly detailed 3D models.
*makes an almost quadropedic shape with her right hand*
These are then rendered to a flat image.
*holds up hand flat*
Which is saved in whatever format they use for textures; maybe DDS or TIF.
In KR things are represented by flat polygons.
*holds up another hand flat*
Which are textured with the aforementioned render.
*brings her hands together to indicate the render represented by her left hand, onto the flat poly represented by her right*
These are then rendered by the engine, giving the appearance of a high poly-count, while actually having a comparatively low one.

Or maybe...

Best of both worlds?
