Re: Not for Online

Naw, EA consider the use and creation of "free shards" illegal

We and other fan sites don't mind if you post pictures created from your own personal shards for comic/funny related things.

But we don't provide instructions/guides on how to setup non EA shards, i'm afraid.

Re: Not for Online

Actually (correct me if I'm wrong) EA's policy is that you may emulate a shard locally, on your own system and not accessible by anyone else. This is why they distributed UOX, the very first UO shard emulator, themselves on the Beta distribution CD.

However, it's still best not to discuss it on supported forums for production shards, and that is understandable.

As for the UOX thing, I think that was stratics who used to host the UOX emulator.

Yea, it was

It's on the left hand side, UOX Emulator.

Re: Not for Online

I thought that that would be bad for the simple reason that you would have the server side code running on your own computer.

When I first started playing I asked on Stratics why there wasnt a small single player tutorial. This would let you figure out controls etc without any risk and more importantly, would let you see how a session that doesnt depend on connectivity would play. So that you would have a non-net comparison and be able to recognize lag very easily.

Everyones big argument aainst it was that the server code would be distributed and that was a no-no...

HARR! That's funny, since there was an offline, single-player tutorial on the T2A CD. You were in Ocllo and had a "guide wisp" which was actually very neat. The wisp guided you around and told you about things. Eventually, you had to go get a "glass sword" from a local NPC and go kill a dragon outside of town. It was a great idea and I'm really not sure why it was dropped...

guide wisp: "Ooh! Doesn't that dragon look mean!"
