No plans to reopen the UO Pro program.

I spoke briefly with Jeremy about a few issues, and got clarification on some

They aren't going to reopen the UO Pro program, so no programs will ever get the "approved" status
They aren't going to allow modification of the 2D client, but do allow modications of the UOKR client (such as skinning etc)
Third party programs to allow people to modify the skin of the UO2D client, won't be allowed either

Jeremy doesn't think we'll get our interview back from Chris Rabideau (sp), because..

Quote:
Nine tenths of his answers were “we’ll answer that at a later date."
But she's going to look at it again to see if it's useable or not.

Re: No plans to reopen the UO Pro program.

Maybe it's time then to get rid of the dead remains of the UO Pro program... for the good of the community.

The UO Pro list is inaccurate, incomplete, and extremely out of date. There are programs that should be on the UO Pro list, and are not. The list hasn't been changed or updated in many years.

Yet there are those in the community that wave it as the "definitive word" about whenever there is a question as to what is legal to use and what is not. When this discussion comes up, arguements and debates ensue because it is commonly acknowledged that there are programs that considered "in the spirit of UO Pro" even by UO devs and community leaders, but are not on the list.

The UO Pro list no longer serves it's intended purpose or the UO community... UO Pro as it is used now is detrimental rather than helpful.

The UO Pro list should be deleted.

*agrees with Nok*

I'm thinking the UO Pro Program was nixed because it sounds like you studder when you say it.

Re: No plans to reopen the UO Pro program.

There are only 7 UO Pro programs. Most, if not all, still work. I don't see why people are saying the program should be canceled when it has been for many years. The program has been suspended since June 18, 1999.

We, you, I, Dip, and nearly all old UO vets know and remember that the program was cancelled/suspended (which each of those are two different things).

Let me speak only for myself here, I am not asking for the program's cancellation or suspension... I am calling for the deletion of any references to the program. Like it never existed.

This is not an indictment of the original 7 programs on the UO Pro list, this is an effort to stop people from using the UO Pro list as the "be all & end all" of what are legal programs to use for those playing UO. Yet it there are those programs not on "the list" but are considered "in the spirit of UO Pro" that are commonly accepted as legal to use.

Such as InsideUO, SmithCalc, UOATranslator, UO Bulk Order Deeds, UO House Builder, UORudder, UOHomeowner, UO Macro Edit UOTamer, UOTime, UO Vendor, UOWedding, and plenty of others... I could go on. None of these are on the UO Pro list, but all of them are considered legal to use... even some of the devs themselves use them.

This confuses newer players and causes debate in the community every time the subject comes up. Wouldn't it be good for the community at large for EA Mythic to eliminate this point of contention?

Re: No plans to reopen the UO Pro program.

Even if the name UOPro was eliminated the list would remain. UOAssist has to have some sort of official status because any program created like it would be illegal. So your whole basis of preventing people from using it as a "be all & end all" list falls apart.

Re: No plans to reopen the UO Pro program.

If certain programs that are considered illegal today were given UOPro status in the past (let's say, a program with similar functionality to UOAssist or perhaps a program that ran scripts...hm?) then the playerbase would view them just the same as it views UOAssist; that is, a perfectly legal and inherently good and useful tool (that is, most people I'm sure except for lunatics like myself).

What I'm getting to is, does "UOPro" status make UOAssist any less of a "haxxor tool" and similar tools any less safe or useful? In other words, if I made a tool that functioned exactly like UOAssist but put my own logo on it and distributed it, is it illegal?

The answer of course is yes, but we all know in the back of our minds that the answer is not grounded in reason. This is why I agree with Nok.

Edited to make more sense.

Re: No plans to reopen the UO Pro program.

Furthermore, people (such as myself) still call the UO Team OSI even though the division was officially disbanded years ago. So even if the UOPro name was discontinued, people would still call the list of official programs as UOPro.
