http://tukaram.net/melee.htm

Here is a guide to melee skills. It is a little old so it doesn't include the newer monsters. But it is pretty good for a newbie to train on. I still fight most of these guys while training.

As far as some of the newer monsters I would recommend the Waste (desert area in Tokuno right outside of town) You start on Deathwatch Beetle Hatchlings then move up to Orcs. Both are right there near each other. The beetle hatchlings are good because they do not aggro on you until you attack them. You can stand in a mess of them and only the one you attack will fight you.

Beetles take you up to the mid 30's, Orcs take you up to around 70, then you can move on to Solen Infiltrators, they will take you up to 110.

Re: newbie

I think that once you hit around 75-ish melee skills, you can go to dungeon Despise and go upstairs to where all the Lizardmen are. You get Spined hides off of them which can be sold to other players, used to train Tailoring, or turned in to Community Collections for neat rewards.

I spent alot of time running around Haven training. There are Lizardmen there, orcs, mongbats, etc, etc.

Re: newbie

If you buy all your skills from a NPC, then despise dungeon is the place to go. Fight ettins at 1st, then earth eli's, then go downstairs to kill trolls. When you get to 90+ skill, go fight Ogre Lords. You can make any character, from start to finish in that dungeon. I love it for training. Get yourself a bag of sending, and loot the gold and send it to your bank. Its good for insurance money, and it helps to have gold

I'd definitely spend time in the Waste of Makoto-Jima raising your skills on the Deathwatch Beetle Hatchlings, those will actually take you well over 60 skill level in all the fighting skills (weapon, anatomy, tactics, parry) and you should get Healing gains, as well. Once the gains slow down the adult Deathwatch Beetles will give you more of a challenge, up to the 70's. Only then would I proceed to Despise to fight the Ettins and Earth Elementals.

Good luck, and welcome to UO!
