The first thing I would do in your shoes is just pick one of the servers that has the lowest latency. When you log in and have to choose a server, there wil be some numbers next to them; these numbers should be as low as possible. The interface is a bit strange, but seeing as how you are not used to others like WoW or DAoC, it wont be as hard as coming here from one of those. UO was my first MMO and Im pretty good with figuring stuff out and it was aout a wek till I felt like I had a good grasp on it. We are getting a new client very soon, so we'll all be in that boat again anyway... ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: New uo player(also new to online mmorpgs) A couple of things to note. UO is getting a major facelift in the next few months: a new client, and all new artwork. When that happens, the current 3d client (which is the least popular of the two current clients) will no longer be supported. Thus, it is probably best if you learn the game on the current 2d client. As a general rule, try to pick a server in your geographical region. Atlantic has the biggest population of the US servers. Europa and Drachenfels serve Europe, Oceania serves Australia/Oceania, and there are a bunch of servers in Japan and Korea. UO has no in-game chat system currently, so most players use ICQ for chat purposes. That may change a bit when the new client comes out; details aren't very plentiful yet. For a first character, a Paladin is good if you want a warrior type, because there is a fun and useful quest involved. For crafters, the Blacksmith template will also give you a nice starting quest. Welcome to UO, and to UO Forums! ![]() ![]() |

![]() | Re: New uo player(also new to online mmorpgs) My advice to a new player, (because I am still 7months young in the game) is to not get frustrated! You'll have lots of questions about the game, and the best place to find answers to them, is either here on the forum or from fellow in-game players. There is a place in most towns called a BANK, this is where you can store items, gold and the what not.... also many players gather at the bank, especially in the cities of Britain and Haven. This place will be a great source of knowledge for you, because many players at the banks will be willing to help you and answer your questions. Also, it's VERY important to realize that there are two identical "worlds" in UO. If you've ever visited a moongate (blue sphere looking thing that telports you) you'll notice that two of the buttons are Trammel and Felucca. BEWARE FELUCCA, this is a place where fellow players can kill you and loot your body, but Trammel is safe, so stick to trammel for now and good luck! ![]() |

As said it can be a frustrating time when new,so dont be afraid to ask any questions you need help with. Never feel your questions are 'silly' as we were all new one time and with all the changes heading our way, there will be many more of us that will need to learn new things also. I still am very 'new' in some things in UO that I havent tried yet, after 5 yrs,and its only by people asking and others replying that gives us the answers. So good luck in your new venture and have lots of fun ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() | Welcome and good luck in finding your place in UO, it is a game where once you find your feet you can spend alot of time doing things without managing to do everything. I too played WoW and found it boring and too restrictive, in UO you can pretty much go anywhere if you can run fast enough to avoid some monsters. Plus there's not that disabilitating feature of only being able to speak to people on the same side as you or go hunting with people of the same level. I personally find the intro given to new players to be very lacking and uninformative in so many ways. There's too much they take for granted that other players will help newer ones, when many are too busy doing their own thing to bother. Also some new players may be too nervous to ask for help or want to be able to learn by themselves. I might write a new player guide one day... hehe. |

![]() | Re: New uo player(also new to online mmorpgs) It would also be smart to choose a server that shares your time zone or near your time zone. for example, my current shard which im leaving is east coast and I live on the east coast. So therefore I have a better connection to the server I believe and lower latency. |
