new theif/pickpocket & and slightly new player

I have some experience in UO from 2001 or so, but not much more than a month or two.

I'm sick of the cookie-cutter games like WoW and my computer isn't quite up to speed for the latest and greatest games so I started up my UO account again. I enjoy the look and feel of the 2D client but look forward to the new client, so I guess it was a good time to reactivate.

Anyhow, I've created a character on Origin (lowest ping) and one on Lake Superior (where I played before). I'm mostly interested in self-sufficient theif-type characters. I like to explore, steal, survive with my own skills, and basically operate within a moral compass that I create for myself. Being a new(er) player, how hard is it for me to operate a character like this in a mature game with a lot of high-end players? My concern is that once I leave New Haven, I'm not going to be able to perform any sort of theivery or build my stats.

Any good recommendations for this type of character? I'm sure I'm better off rolling a hack and slash character, but that is not really my style. I like crafting and I like to solo... I want to be the creepy old guy that lives in the woods

Thanks!

Re: new theif/pickpocket & and slightly new player

Welcome to UO Forums and back to UO santan

I haven't played a thief so can't give you much advice. I do know that you will only be able to steal from players in fel (I think you have to join a NPC thief guild first). There are two places you can get stealable artifacts: Doom and the Tukono mines. Of course you can steal deco type things from NPCs. I believe the best way to gain stealing is in fel with a packy guarding you and stealing from the pack. I believe you want to steal your skill level in stones (ie if you are at 50 stealing you will want to steal somthing weighing about 5 stones. I think they actually recommend it from 46-55 for 5 stones, 56-65 for 6 stones and so forth).

Hope you have fun with your characters. If you need anything on LS let me know

Re: new theif/pickpocket & and slightly new player

Thieves are "mostly" dead. There are places where they come in handy, and have fun, like the champion spawns in Felluca. Other than stealing from players and monsters in Felluca, your only other choice is stealing "artifacts" from Doom and Tokuno.

Now, if you are a mage / thief, you will have better luck, as a mage can go jsut about anywhere and survive.

For now, until you are established, try this
Magery 100
Eval int 100
Med 100
Snoop 100 (optional)
Steal 100
Hide 100
Stealth 100

For PvP, swap out snoop with resistance.

Re: new theif/pickpocket & and slightly new player

what about a thief with some bard abilities? How would that compare to a thief with mage skills?

The idea of provoking sounds interesting to me. Bards always seem a little questionable in regards to what is right and wrong and

How are the ninja classes? Worth paying for the upgrade code?

Thanks everyone. Looking forward to getting home from work to play around some more.

Re: new theif/pickpocket & and slightly new player

For a 'pure thief' these are the only skills that are required:

100+ stealing
100 snooping
100 hiding
80 stealth
100+ ninjitsu

That's only 480 skill points and that's after you include skill bonuses from items. The rest of the template is up to you. Magery is one of the more useful skills. Invisibility is my most used spell. And "tele hide" still works. For melee skills, most people go with either wrestling or fencing. Fencing gives you access to skills like Shadow Strike. But with wrestling you don't have to worry about re-equiping your weapon to dodge after a steal.

You should check out the FAQ on the stratics thief forum, but some of it is out-dated. And here's a guide that I wrote over a year ago:

The more stealth one has the harder it is to get detected.

Bard thief would be tough because of the need of alot of skill points...

Read Chads guide. Its got alot of great info in it for the budding thief.
