New Player Looking for Advice

I just started playing UO and I'm looking for some advice on where to go from here. I completed the trainer quests in New Haven that were recommended for my class (Warrior), but can't seem to find any NPCs who guide me further. Is there more to do on Haven?

If not, where should I go from here? Is there an area after Haven that's good for noobs? Should I be working on other skills, or are there places I can begin exploring, quests I can begin completing, and loot I can be finding?

Also, what kind of things are there to do in UO? The instruction manual was rather sparse, so I'm not sure what there is in this game besides grinding skills. It seems a bit different from the MMOGs I'm used to, but I'm sure there's tons of fun stuff out there I can do. I just need someone to point me in the right direction

Re: New Player Looking for Advice

Welcome to UO and UOF Polkapunk! What isn't there to do in UO?! If your ready to leave New Haven you want to go to the right of town and find the blue moongate. Check the map out here Brand Spanking New Haven Map

Here is a mini guide for warriors http://www.uoforums.com/f1146/traini...it-when-45745/

I suggest you hop through moongates and find a busy town on your shard. Usually it is Luna or Britinia. I hear though Luna is being invaded right now, so you may want to skip it right now.

Once you have some money I'd buy some Rune books with towns & dungeons. You need skill (either 50 in magic of paladin) to use them or recall scrolls that you can buy at a vendor. Then you can hop all over the place. My favorite dungeon as a newbie was Shame. I haven't played in a few years but i'm sure some one from the boards can help you out, and maybe even get you those rune books

Re: New Player Looking for Advice

Hi Polkapunk,

Like Snuggs suggested... welcome to UO and UOF. Explore... UO is HUGE. Visit the forums (like UOF and others), lots of knowledgeable players. Also check out UOGuide.com, it's an excellent UO wiki... and very up to date.

Don't know if you've played other MMOs or not... but with UO, you'll need to think more "outside the box" in terms of what to do in the game. Lots of MMOs have level grinding and player quests that are very regimented... you can almost go through them on auto-pilot. UO is considered a "sandbox" type of MMO... meaning it's what you make of it, how you decide to play it, you can do almost anything you want to do when you want to do it (with a few exceptions).

UO is very... free form.

Welcome to UO. Okay you have done some of the new player quests in new haven. What now you ask? Anything you want is the answer. UO unlike ever modern game, will not guide you anymore. UO will not tell you where to go or what to fight. Go anywhere you wish, just hit the moongate and go. Though you do need to have your account upgraded to either mondain's legacy or the 9th anniversary edition to have access to all current expansions. If you have all current expansions then you can head over to the city of heartwood, where there are many quest givers (like you would be familiar with from other games). Some are for warriors, some are for crafters. You need to read the quest and see what they are asking you to do before you accept or reject the quest.

UO really leaves your gameplay up too you. With your realtively new character you could go to the hardest pvm dungeon/boss in the game. You are not going to live long, but you can go there. Or you could head through the moongate to the felucca facet, where it is full on pvp action if you wish. There are even shards (Lake Superior) is one that a group of players has organized weekly gatherings for players of all skill levels, to explore, train, and adventure with. You are only limited by your imagination on what you wish to do in game.

I wish you well in your adventures and again welcome to UO.

Re: New Player Looking for Advice

Unlike other MMOs once you have finished the New Haven quest, there aren't many more to do. You have the Heartwood for crafters, escorts for the virtue of compassion, the stolen quest, the hags quest, the collectors quest and a couple of others. Except for Heartwood, these are more for fun than skill building. I agree that the first thing to do is go exploring. Use the moongates to go see the world. But be warned Fel is pvp so if you go there as a young warrior be sure to insure everything and be prepared to die. A good 1st dungeon is despise with lizardmen. They will help you gain both skill and money. They don't drop much gold so skin them and sell those hides. The next thing is talk to people. Most people on the shards are more than willing to help. On LA, UMP, MHC, KOL all go out of their way to help new players. I know your shard will also have guilds that help.

Re: New Player Looking for Advice

Some suggestions:

1) Find a Guild that welcomes newcomers. They can show you the ropes, maybe outfit you with some gear and take you on hunts. I once gave a new guy a small house.

2) Start more characters. The world is very different as a Warrior or a Mage or a Tamer, Archer, Miner, etc.

3) If you haven't already, die as soon as you can so you know what to expect and how to deal with it. Put all your gear in the bank, stable your ride and go get killed (preferably near a Healer!).

4) And by all means explore everywhere. Just research your destinations first. UO Stratics - News - Main on the left side of that site there is a section titled Maps & Locations. Use it to find out what is where. This site UO Stratics - Hunter's Guide - Welcome! lists all the creatures you will find in UO. It describes their strengths, etc. Research away!

5) Do what you find fun! Good hunting

Re: New Player Looking for Advice

Thank you all so much for your advice! I was a bit lost at what to do at first but I think all this great information will get me headed in the right direction. Or, rather, the direction that interests me.

This game seems a lot more open ended than the MMOGs I'm used to so I wasn't sure if I was missing a chain of quests or was doing something wrong, etc. I think I'll do a little bit of exploring first and then work on finding some people to have fun with.

If you're on Atlantic, feel free to look me up (if there's a way to do that). My player name's Plu. Thanks again for the advice everyone!
