Hey guys, I used to play a bit of UO with my friends years ago, on the old Renaissance client, and I LOVED it. I loved the open endedness and it's the only MMORPG I've ever found where you have the ability to have such a great and varied life with trade skills.
I've seen the new client's coming out this spring/summer, and I'm thinking about joining UO for it. I currently play EVE Online, but because of the way skilling in that works I can take time out of it and not jeopardise my eve skills, so I thought, what the hey! Thing is, is there any point? UO seems much more complicated than it used to be - I spoke to a friend and he says things like houses there's no space for now, people just buy gold so there's no real sense of achievement, and older characters get things like better stat caps and stuff making it harder for new characters. Also, you can buy like character upgrades and stuff so it's hard to get up to the high level anyway. I'm worried that if I start I'll forever be a noob as I haven't got enough time under my belt, and that I'll end up wanting to 'cheat' (in my eyes) by buying stuff (or is that technically not allowed in the EULA, like in eve?). It would be good if maybe they opened a new shard for the release so I could start on a sort of equal footing (or can you transfer characters between shards?), will they do that? I'm just worried it's too late to start ![]() |

Re: New client - is it to late for me?
You can x-fer characters.
You can buy stuffs. You can reach a "high level" in less than a month (unless you go the Tamer route). I haven't touched the new client, but the old isn't so bad. You can place a home somewhere, it just might not be where you want it unless you pay someone for it. You DO NOT need to buy gold/stuffs. You can/will meet some nice people/persons that will help you out at first. (visit "New Haven" or "Luna" normally anyone with a (Young) status gets flocked to, and people tend to help them out with items/gear/gameplay tips). It's never too late to start, and in all actuallity, when the new client comes out, we'll all be starting over in a sense.

The best thing to do if you are unsure about it, would be to give the 7 day trial a go. You will not be dissapointed, UO is one of those it is what you make it because there is so much variety you do what you want to and have fun that way.

I got a few 8th age new account codes lying around. They give you 45 days free playing time and all expansions up to and including Samurai Empire. PM me if you want one

Re: New client - is it to late for me?
it's NEVER too late to start ... that's one of the great points about playing UO
"I'll forever be a noob" ... I feel that we are all forever noob's because there is always something new to try, like changing skills when you want, creating new characters (if you have open slots), redesigning our homes .... there are endless opportunities to keep ourselves 'new' to UO  "Also, you can buy like character upgrades and stuff so it's hard to get up to the high level anyway." Not sure if you meant ... you can by advance character upgrades which makes it easier to advance to a higher leveled skill faster. Which is the way it is and is great for those who have the extra resources (money) available and helpful for those who have little real life in-game time to reach their goals. You can stop and start anytime you need to with UO and not lose your skill points earned or anything else you are working on  (only thing to be careful of is to not let your account lapse after a certain amount of time or you will loose your home (posessions) in the game. As far as I know your characters (and what is on them and in their banks) don't disappear (I know some folks who have returned by reopening their closed accounts from long ago, and their characters are just as they were, with all their bank, paperdoll and backpack items.) As for housing locations, I think it depends on the shard you wish to make your homestead and the facet on that shard. There are some nice spots on Sonoma, my home shard, still available because Sonoma is considered small in population. "Thing is, is there any point?" Oh I think so and the only way you will know for sure is to "give it a try" like the other posters have suggested. Psssst .... and Welcome to UOForums :cheesy: |
