Re: Need help with picking skills?

Yes and no with the token, and in UO, there isn't a 'simple' answer on a template, it's not like any other game for that . There are so many ways to arrange skills, items and their combinations it makes even a veteran's head spin at times, basically pretty much any template can be made to work - although some are more successful, or profitable, than others.

As for skills - swords, naturally, anatomy as that increases the damage you can do when you hit, there's an argument about taking tactics but I still think it's worth having. For taming, animal lore, animal taming, and veterinary so you can heal your pet.... but here's where things get tricky.... and if you want to use a shield, parrying is pretty useful...

In that lot, you are short on ways to heal yourself, a lot of 'pure' warriors train healing since combined with high anatomy, you can cure yourself of poison as well as repairing hit point damage. But you will do less direct damage in combat if you don't have chivalry, or bushido, both of which can significantly increase damage output (chiv also gives you a way of magically travelling about the worlds, as well as a quick cure poison and a heal spell, so some use it as their 'healing' option). But, you are now well past your 700 skill point cap! Others go the route of 'vampire warriors', with high necromancy, spirit speak and the right spells you can drain health from the things you fight and reduce your healing needs that way, and spirit speak also gives a quick 'self heal' to keep things topped up - and there are some useful necro spells and summons too, although nothing to allow magical travel.

But lots of tamers also like bard skills, since you can keep the big tough creatures you want to tame calm while you tame them, rather than be running about trying not to get eaten...

Also, if you plan on PvP, there's a lot of detail about skills that differs from what you need to do in PvM.... and since I only PvM, I can't say much useful about the PvP scene.

It's a much more rewarding game than most if you want a 'deeper' character - but the tradeoff is you need to be prepared to take a while learning how it all interlocks.

Be prepared to rebuild and redesign your character a lot, but the best way to go about UO is build something you think will be fun to play, try it (be prepared to die a LOT), read the forums here and on Stratics, and if you can find a guild on your shard that train up new players. It all makes sense after a while, but so much is interdependent it's really hard to say 'this is the template you want' at this stage.

Re: Need help with picking skills?

I'm currently creating a Macer/Tamer with 800~ Skill Points!
Taming
Lore
Vet
Macing (Swords for you?)
Tactics/Bushido (Tactics PvP, Bushido PvM)
Anatomy
Healing
Chivalry (80~)
If you want to not have to raise taming, use the advanced token, you only need about 85 taming for this template to work if you have nice enough jewls.

Re: Need help with picking skills?

Not going to work! with that said you can try it but I think you'll find there just isnt enough skill points to go around. I dont think you can be effective as either a tamer or swordsman by combining the 2 templates as each requires so much to help it be effective.

What are good skills to pick in character creation for a warrior with healing....and what kind of armor would he wear?

Re: Need help with picking skills?

For a PvM warrior:

115-120 Swords (or Fencing, Macing)
115-120 Parry
100 Anatomy
100 Tactics
90-100 Healing
80 Chivalry
100-110 Bushido

I try to have around 115 Strength, 140 Dex, rest in intelligence. Some MR on your armor is nice, but you can somewhat bypass this with a nice mana leech weapon like a soulseeker. Most folks will say wear medable armor, and I'd agree, though I wear a Jackal's Collar for the huge dex bonus, which is why mana leech on a weap is so important to me. I personally, for PvM, prefer elf form for the mana pool bonus and the night sight, but being human instantly gives you 3 MR from the JOAT +20 med and focus.

Re: Need help with picking skills?

Now there, zero, is a nice, solid, starting point. My eyes are still goggling from your original request. Which, by the way, is not a BAD idea, just one that requires lots of money for items, lots of time for raising skills, and a very thorough understanding of the dynamics of the game. As a starting template, not an ideal choice.

Now a healing warrior. That is a solid starting point which incidentally will allow you to raise the seed money for more ambitious characters.
JFK's template is a great starting point. I actually run the same template, with a couple twists. I would like to expand a little on his template though, to clarify some things we sometimes take for granted as veterans.

- With a new account, your maximum stats are capped at 225 total. At 6 months, each character on your account will be given +5 to your stat cap. The stat cap may also be raised through an item called a stat power scroll. These come in varying degrees of power, from +5(many give these away) to +25 (this can cost up to 5 million or more).
(Yes, you may eat a +5 then a +25, but NO, they do not stack. It merely raises you cap by the difference). So the maximum stat cap is 255.

- Each stat cannot be raised (except through items) beyond 125. So, in JFK's template, he uses items to get to 140 Dex (Jackals collar is +16 to Dexterity).

Skills - When you start the game, your total skill cap is 700. For each year your account is active (Up to 4 years), you will receive a +5 bonus to that, for a total possible of 720 skill.

When you start the game, each skill cannot be raised over 100. There are items in the game that will let you raise the cap on a SPECIFIC skill in +5 point increments. +5 scrolls are either thrown out or given away. At the far end a +20, depending on the skill, can cost form 1 to 20 million. Again, In JFK's template, you will have to find items that let you reach those goals.

MR = Man Regen
Medable armor - allows fast regeneration of mana through the meditation skill. Certain magic items, and all leather armor and clothing, are all "medable".

JoaT- Jack of all Trades. Gives you a passive +20 in all skills. Once you raise it (yes, even .1), you lose the bonus for that skill.

Hope that clarifies some things.

Re: Need help with picking skills?

Thom, nice clarification. I do sometimes forget that when I started, all of that would have looked like mumbo jumbo to me lol. Oh, and FWIW, the Jackal's is +15 to dexterity, not strength, but the point is valid. Zero, many items in the game add to your stats....these can be very desireable as they allow you to go way beyond the "fixed" stat cap. I have a dexxer (warrior) with 309 stat points due to items he wears, and I have seen many templates with much higher stat levels than that.
