Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
(reposting this for Leurocian)
"Hail and Well Met! I want to ask you all what you think so far of the Basics Tutorial. If you create a new character with the KR client, the Basics Tutorial should begin for your character. The Basics Tutorial should teach you how to walk, run, loot containers, accept and complete quests, combat, death, etc. I have recently modified some of the KR music for the Basics Tutorial and Haven area. It will be a while before you experience all of those enhancements in game. Anyway, we've had a lot of fun designing this Tutorial for New Players. We've had fun going through it ourselves. I just wanted to ask some feedback about it. Thanks all! " |

Re: Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
This is not directly a part of the tutorials, but something that appears to be awry.
On this board, we have seen about 10 new players, each trying to start out as warriors. The first common problem is class. They tend to think that warrior skills alone are sufficient for survival / success. They tend to avoid chivlary, as Paladins have negative connotations due to games like Diablo and Never Winter Nights. This is FAR from the case. Is there a way to get the point across of template builds in game with a book? I am having a hard time of concieving of one, so don't blame you if you can't either. Personally, I would remove any mention of Paladin, but alas, that is too late. The second problem is with skill gain. Players are provided with no clues as to HOW to advance skill AFTER new haven. I had a thought that might work. After completion of the tutorial for a MAIN weapon skill (archer, swords, mace, fencing), the instructor awards an item and a journeyman's guide. The guide is an in game blessed book, that contains: The level of skill mastery / applicable monsters to hunt / Location of monsters ( I was going to actually build a sample, BUT, I could not find a list of title for skill level anywhere on UO.com or stratics. sample of monsters to hunt for skill range (courtesy stratics warrior forum): *edit* An example would be First page: Warrior, challenge these enemies as you journey through Sosaria and your name shall live in legend! Neophyte (30 ) Novice (40) Apprentice (50) Plague Spawn Alligator, Black Bear, Bogling, Brown Bear, Bullfrog, Giant Toad, Ghoul, Skeleton, Skittering Hopper, Timber Wolf Corpser, Cougar, Grey Wolf, White Wolf Ettin, Gaman Frost Spider, Grizzly Bear, Panther, Polar Bear Journeyman (60) Red Solen Worker Enslaved Gargoyle, Lizardman, Orc, Troll, Ratman Bogling Expert (70) Gazer Larva Dire Wolf, Giant Ice Serpent, Lava Lizard Orc Chopper, Orcish Lord, Swamp Tentacle Harpy, Ogre Adept (80) Black Solen Infiltrator (Warrior) Dull Copper Elemental, Earth Elemental, Stone Gargoyle Cyclopian Warrior, Doppleganger, Juka Warrior, Stone Harpy, Terathan Warrior Frenzied Ostard Master (90) Black Solen Infiltrator (Queen) Bone Knight, Frost Troll, Skeletal Knight Artic Ogre Lord, Ogre Lord Grandmaster (100) Giant Beetle, Fire Beetle, Plague Beast Lord Hiryu, Lesser Hiryu The same could be done for tamers and mages. For archers, i would suggest monsters that allow the archer to replenish their supply of arrows naturally. But we run into the age old dilema of only two monsters actually dropping crossbow bolts as loot.

Re: Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
This might best go somewhere else, but sorta fits in. My big concern is the big wide world outside haven and how "fit" the new players are to encounter it.
While thinking about the above idea with a book containing types of creatures to hunt per skill attainment, it ocurred to me that this idea could be even more useful. With the addition of a funtional map with waypoints in KR, would it be possible to have waypoint books? 1) like rune book, click on a pre-marked location, and it adds the waypoint for you ( can be instanced upon destination, permanent add, etc) 2) NPC awarded rune books are for type of character (mage, crafter, tamer, warrior) and contain waypoints to areas of interest a new player would need (mage shops, bank, etc) for a city. 3) Cartographers could be given the ability to make new waypoint books, using a sextant to "mark" the waypoint in a book. Books could be crafted by them, with amount of waypoints per book dependant on skill level. Hopefully, this would get people exploring again, as not knowing WHERE you are is one of the current biggest drawbacks to UO land travel (unless you have UOAM). So, for one solution we have an added functionality to a skill, and potentially useful new ways of navigating overland. For instance, Cartographers could make waypoints of all the T-Map spots, neatly sidestepping that problem if we cannot use UOAM.

Re: Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
I made a new character on TC and started the tutorial. The game crashed during the tutorial (no surprise there!). When I turned it back on the tutorial lady would no longer talk to me. I made another new character and did not get the tutorial again.
I sent in a bug report for the first time but not for the 2nd because I didn't know if the 2nd character was supposed to get the tutorial.

Re: Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
The real question about the KR map is whether or not they are going to make it compatible with current UOAM servers to allow guilds to see each others' locations on the map. If this is not implemented, everyone will still need UOAM to PvP.

Re: Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
I died because of not understanding that map in the tutorial. Was trying to find my way through the zombies and went wrong way while trying to understand where I was headed by the map..... was not amused. Then I barely found the healer and got back before the body decayed, and Zombies were still hanging out close by... Not a good opening experience for a new player at all.

Re: Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
When we had to loot a skeleton, I didn't read the directions entirely and didn't know to loot everything, which is key for next steps. It would be nice if after a few minutes something would pop up and say hey... you need to finish looting the skeleton etc.
I also had a hard time with the map. I know the light colors stay in theme with the spell books and all but I really do think its too difficult to deciefer, as are the spell icons in the hot bar. My only other problem was my map disappeared when doing the quest. I closed it out and tried to open it again and it wouldn't open. I really did like the wavy lights guiding us next to the next location.

Re: Looking for Feedback - the Basics Tutorial
I also started a new character on TC and I liked the basic tutorial very much.
but like everyone else the map caused me alot of problems, trying to work out were to go next, before i was attacked made me start to panic a little and when i had finished and went back to the town to see the trainers I could not avoid going to the bank and picking up anything good that had been left by players cleaning out their bank boxes (normal test centre stuff)and completly forgot to go to the trainer but I do think that the tutorial is very good and really helps you to get to know what to do next. ![]()

I really do like the tutorial, even if it need tweaking. The katana-quest with the monster-slaying with a sword isn't that cool, when you start a mage i.e. It would be great if it would be somewhat more class-specific.
Also: I love the ideas of baldguy. Especially the skill training books! That would be a real help for new players. Combined with waypoint books, this could really get players to explore again. |
