The quieter shards, yes, you can place large plots/homes. (Lake Austin for example, Legends perhaps)
Lake Austin did not exist in 2001.

Until the Age of Shadows there was not a single house spot that was known that someone would not place at. Even a small house (7x7) in the swamp surrounded by terrible spawn would be placed and couple be sold for several hundred thousand gold. Towards the end it was a little easier to find Felucca spots, but nothing larger than a small house.

Re: Land Avalibility

Just started UO again after playing in about the same time as op (during UO:Renaissance) I wanted to play on the most active shard so I chose Atlantic (from what I read) I already found 3 spots near Brit with no/little spawns that can fit at least a 7x8

Re: Land Avalibility

plenty of room on lake austin ...more populated shards like atlantic it may take a while but you should still be able to get a smaller house somewhere

Re: Land Avalibility

My bud placed a tower in tram on Chessy yesterday after spending about 30 minutes looking around. So yes the land is out there.
