Don't hesitate to ask all the question you have either, lots of knowledgeable folks here and we all know what a steep learning curve it was starting out.
Hope your experiences get better!

KT it be Mrs Carpathia hehe
Lol, yes, joining a guild is definately the way to go, though its not everyones choice.

Just before reading this thread I had been posting a reply to some one on Europa. When I came here and read 'I believe there are many here that might have considered changing shards just to play with KT ' I thought to myself, where did KT come into this?

I had to read through the thread again twice before it dawned on me KT = Kingtony, lol.

KT [Knights Templar ] was the first guild I joined when I began playing

Got me confused for a while there

Re: I really want to like this game...

No matter how much time you have put into a server, don't up and leave because your disappointed. Only switch shards if you are totally and completely sure you want to. The game of Ultima Online is a busy place and a lot of times players no matter how nice they are, are in such a hurry with their daily lives they pay you no attention.

Then there are the sad forty year olds still living in their parents basement, playing Ultima day and night and laughing when they have greifed or pk'd some new players. Remember the attitudes of some of a shards players are not a representation of the entire shards community.

I would suggest you stay on your current shard. heavily populated shards are excellent with commerce and guildplay. With enough players you find a good variety of stuff. First off you will need to find a guild. Usually a good guild will friend you to the guildhouse and allow you access to certain training equipment not to mention a roof over your head that is friendlier than the god awful INN. This will allow you to log in and out and change characters at your will. You will also be able to buy items from guildmates at somtimes discounted prices. Most guilds will have a blacksmith for you as well as give you certain items to them are junk but to a new player could save your life.

Second you will need to save some gold. Our world like the real word has an economy with falling and rising prices almost daily. It is always good to keep a good supply of gold in your bank. What costs a lot today could become almost worthless tomorrow. Remember to always keep on the lookout for good deals. hanging around banks in large cities could just warrant you a sweet deal. Somtimes a person trying to sell somthing will even give you a killer deal because they want rid of whatever they are peddling. But most of all about saving gold is that you will need large ammounts of it in the future. Your house will cost millions of gold. You might get lucky and a guild mate will give you a house or sell one to you cheap! But on heavily populated servers this is a bit rare unless the house is tiny and in a bad spot...but you never know!

Third, you will be aggrivated! you will be pissed! you will want to slam your head on your desk so much it leaves your brain dripping from your ears. But you must take a deep breath and calm down. You must repeat these words to yourself...

It is only a game
It is only a game
It is only a game

I mention this because like the real world you will run into hardships. The great thing about Ultima Online is if you become to angry, solving your problems is only a mouse click away. Somtimes people need a break from the game. When I get overly aggrivated I close the game down and do somthing else.

Like many players have said already Ultima Online has the greatest community. This is because the game is so diverse and so complicated it makes its players ban together to help each other, or turns them against each other. Depending on which road you take could be worlds of excitement and adventure. You will meet people that are nicer than anyone you will ever know. You will also meet people more evil than a b-movie villin.

Community is what keeps us together. From the Role Players of Europe and Cheasapeke, to the Materialistic Wealth Accumuaters of Atlantic, Pacific, and Great Lakes...all the way to the clashing of Good and Evil of the Siege Perilous and Mungen servers and the tight knit friends of Sonoma, Baja and Lake Austin.

Welcome to the multiverse of worlds that makes up our precious

ULTIMA ONLINE

Re: I really want to like this game...

WoW, KitKat, you realy met a weaner... Don't take it personel, just ask someone else... or come here we will help all we can...

Are you realy New? hehe, just had to ask... hehe...

Heres some basics about Britainia... Haven is the city you started in, unless you took the moongate, in which case I'm not sure where you are... Try to find the moongate again and go back to Haven... Its the starter area so you can do alot there...

Training, your chr can only have 700 points in skills... with a 20 point bonus after they're 5 yrs old or maybe its 4 yrs, I forget... and most skills will top at 100 points for now.... You can raise them to 120 points by eating a power scroll, but you still have to live within the 700 pt cap... So you do the math, 7x100 or 6x120....

Ultima has like 48 skills to choose from... Crafting, Combat, Magic... www.uo.com has a player guide if you want to look.... or uo.stratics.com has good guides too...

You can log out safely in Inns & Taverns or by building a fire & using a bedroll in the wilderness after your camp is "secured", just wait 1 min after starting a fire... If you don't safely log out, your chr stands there for 3 minutes before leaving the game...

To answer some of your questions, Yes, you need to keep your magic books in you main backpack to use their spells... don't worry, they are blessed, so they never fall to your corpse... do a mouse over to see...

and Yes, you need to remember where your corpse is... but hey don't take anything out your not willing to loose... after all most of your stuff up till now can be replaced.... Stick to animal fighting until your about 70.... Learn when to flee, if the going gets tuff... Buy a horse at the stables & feed it apples... or learn 30 pts in taming and tame one for free...

You can try a pre made templete or make one yourself.... I generally set strength to its highest and Dex, Int low... I think its better to start with high str for carrying stuff... pick 2 skills high, 1 low...

Not sure which client your using KR or Classic 2d, but there are many macros you can set up to make play more easy... Just use some common sence when fighting things... Like towns are pretty safe, but the wilderness is differant... Grey names won't attack you but red names will... some will throw magic at you from a screen aways, Reapers will deadly poison...

You can make up to 6 chrs on any shard or on all shards... but you can only own 1 house ascosiated to your account ... and you can own as many accounts as you can pay each month... hehe....

You can take a public moongate to many areas, they are located by major cities... some areas have differant rules too... such as Felluca has free for all PvP, any player can attack any other player... Town zones are safe, but watch for thieves... Trammel is a differant rule set too, consentual PvP... If you join a Guild you can fight with Guildmates... The lands of Malas are mainly player housing, Ilsnara & T2a is more advanced play than the main continent of Britainia... Dungeons are more advanced play too...

Most major cities have "Minter" or "Banker" npcs, so if you are nearby one just "Yell" Bank to access your bank box, the only truely secure thing you have... Most containers can hold 125 items and have a limited weight they can hold, but your bankbox has un limited weight restrictions...

When I started 120 month ago, we had training dumbies located in town to beat on up to 28 points in any weapons skill, archery butts for archers... of course if you had the gold, you could buy up to 30pts from guildmasters of that skill... Just remember any goodies you find as loot can be sold to a provisioner for gold... cut you kills with a knife to get meat & hides, sell to proper npcs... Buy a boat, learn to fish....

Lots of things to try out if you want... I have 12 chrs myself...

Re: I really want to like this game...

Slightly off-topic, but I can still remember the satisfaction when a friend and I took down our first Ogre. Took like 30 bandages and a lot of running XD

The problem with UO when youre a new player is that you don't really know what to do. There's no goal in the game. This is actually what makes the game so great! You can do whatever you want! A friend of mine made wooden shields for a year and sold it to a NPC to earn money, just because he wanted to. My first char was a basic warrior with a Halberd and I spent lots of time training him and getting to know people.

My tip to you, set yourself some goals. For instance, train you char, get nough money to buy a house, start collecting rare items and so on. Whatever you want really. The game is 10 times more fun if you get to know some people ingame, so find yourself a guild.

If you ever come to Europa, don't hesitate to contact me ingame. I usually hang out by brit bank wearing all purple ^^

Re: I really want to like this game...

I've been having a great time! I got in to a guild, and they've all been incredibly helpful. One of them even gave me a house! It's rather small, but it is three stories, and it's a place I can call my own. So far I have all my combat skills at 50% or higher and looking for a new place to hunt.
