Re: I just have to vent somewhere

first let me preface this by saying I have absolutely no knowledge of any of this...but hackers will often put items up for sale on auction then create a second acct and outbid everyone..then they transfer said items to another UO acct and sometimes transfer again..thus making the trail harder to follow. Also what this does it make it appear to EA as if the final holder is innocent of everything.

Re: I just have to vent somewhere

I've played UO for over 8 years on and off and I have never bought a single rare. When you are willing to take on assumed risk you should realize you might get screwed in the end. If you have an extreme collection of rares then bragging about it is asking for trouble.

On the other hand, ICQ is a great way to allow for account insecurities, and clicking on any message you did not specifically solicit is also asking for trouble.

Re: I just have to vent somewhere

Sorry about what happened to your friend, I recently lost my entire house full of rares due to a un-seen billing error during my hiatus, so I know the feeling. I however, didn't have any uber-rares worth insane gold in the house.

Has your friend went through the proper legal channels (file a police report, first off) to see that the hacker is prosecuted? Hacker attacks causing damage and crossing state lines is a felony and the FBI will most likely get involved once he files a police report.

Computer crimes happen often these days, but the people committing them think they're invulnerable and can get away with it. Have your friend start the legal battle and tell him to please not let this guy get away with it. From the sounds of it the entire bids on the auction site sound staged as a legit way to move the merchandise away from his 'hacker account'.

He may try it again; don't let him get the chance.

I've even sold him a few things over the past year he paid retail for but that doesn't mean he isn't what I think hes not.

He told me he traded for all his stuff. Hes pretty nice when you talk with him ingame and he seems pretty devoted. I can't vouch for him but I don't believe hes the guy who hacked your friend.

"I think as a one of the newer members of the rare's community, that we should blacklist his museum and make sure that he will not be able to deal those items to anyone."

And Elbryan, being new to the community and judging someone off hand is probably an easier way to get into the blacklist. If you don't know how someone obtained his/her items and immediatly yield "blacklist", you're throwing out accusations that are potientially false.

It takes strong evidence to prove someone obtained the items through questionable methods. Otherwise, how do you prove he didn't buy them with his own gold or bought them with cash?
Back when the items first came up for sale I was in contact with the guy who put them on the auction on EU. His name was 'UORares Trade'.
I am not sure if this 'of the Ring' person actually bought Trade's stuff, but I think it's the same person. Trade also stopped using ICQ and 'of the Rings's (ICQ name: Lord of the Ring) ICQ no. is suddenly on the house plot, where the hacked items were on display. The house owner hasn't changed though, which leads me to believe that it's the same person, who just tried to adapt a new image.
I have talked to this Lord of Ring person and his writing style is similar and is just very dodgy.

Here is how I see it. The hacker openly had those items up for sale on Europa or UOAuction2. Everyone who bid on any of the big items got outbided by crazy amounts from someone no one knows.
I am not sure when this happened, but I know several people that bought stuff, prior to it becoming well known that it concerned hacked stuff, for relatively low prices. I personally bought 1 item and it was pretty cheap. (this was before anyone on EU or Stratics knew it was hacked stuff, so I wasn't knowingly profiting from someone's demise.)

I hate EA for allowing Character Transfer. I know it's too late now, but to save the last pieces of shard history that are left, they should make Character Transfering naked character only!

Fine with me..... would it hurt anything to allow bank checks too? I can't think of a reason why not.

Manti.... I remember hearing about this misfortune before and I am always sorry to hear it.

In a way, the same thing happened to people who's vine cords got deleted. Sure, everyone laughs, but if one were to invest possibly all of their uo earnings over years into something and have it taken away, it is pretty much the same feeling this guy must have felt. Not saying anyone who bought them was a nice person (they may be) or did not know what they were doing (they may have), but it could have happened like this for some. Well, if it did, those people laughing will not have anyone left to laugh *at* pretty soon.

Something to keep in mind re: EA's unwillingness to reimburse people when they get hacked or actioned, either/or.

Thankfully I did not ever buy vine cords myself, but this whole player pitchfork-waving forcing the dev's hands just pisses me off.

Since this is a venting thread, I figured why not. Maybe someone will understand the other side a little bit -- I tried!

I agree, I think char xfer was one of the biggest causes of UO downfall. People don't have to work anymore for something to be proud of, they just move it all. And some actually get joy out of taking away a shard's history

I disagree. It has actually concentrated rares collections and improved the economy a lot. Now prices are pretty equal on all shards, and collectors are able to get a lot of new rares. Prior to xshard many collectors I knew got frustrated since they either owned all the rares available on their shard or there just weren't any for sale. Now a collector can consider many different shards and sellers. Yes this does mean an event item might leave the shard, but that still means a local collector didn't jump on it, and it's still possible to buy stuff back.
And you make a mistake, they have worked for it, just on another shard. Back in the day quite a few people would just buy a vet account for a specific server and trade their stuff via a broker.

Plus the people make the shard and its history. Not just the items.

As people left UO many shards got a bit empty. Shard transfers kept the economy healthy and the high end players happy.

I utterly disagree 110%!

1. concentrated rares collections - and that's a good thing? I think NOT!

2. Improved the economy ROTFLMAO

3. Yes this does mean an event item might leave the shard, but that still means a local collector didn't jump on it, and it's still possible to buy stuff back. Yeah righty... if you got 500 gazillion gp or an equivalent amount in rl cash!

4. Shard transfers kept the economy healthy and the high end players happy. Yeah right! High end players... pffft!

Come again...
