The client is the deal on your pc... its interface and graphics.. interface that communicates to the server code what your doing so the server can update where you are and what your doing.. and the client is the graphics engine...

The server code is the core of the game.. it governs the game play.. the skills the combat ect..it does the calulations for if you make something, the damage ect... the client has nothing to do with game play... the server code is the same code we have had since early alpha... late 95/96ish

Oh the graphics engine (client) displays what graphics the server code tells it to (the graphics are stored on your pc)

So in the nuts shell... any problems you have in game play... there still going to be there after KR goes live and even into the future until EA gets around to fixing the issues in the server code...

But one thing at a time....

Re: I installed I tested and I am not installing the Final Release.

So I understand everyone's position on UO:KR. I suppose I can see how some people enjoy it, but here's my two cents.
First off, I want to say that i definitely don't intend to offend anyone. Just stating my opinion.

***begin rant***
So I downloaded UO:KR, and ran it for the first time, very excited. I opened it up, logged in and said "Hey, I didn't know I was playing World of Warcraft!".

Honestly. The interface, menus, chat, everything- near carbon copies of World of Warcraft.

Now, I understand that WoW has been enormously successful. But you can't simply ride the coattails of a different game, and expect to be "revolutionary" even in your own realm.

Like I said, I don't want to offend anyone, but Dev team.. Develop. Don't depend on Blizzard to come up with ideas, and then mold them into your own.

****end of rant******

The interface has never been what attracted people to UO or kept them playing for a decade. I've never played WoW but I have a feeling that the new KR UI isn't just copying WoW - it's copying what has become the new standard in interface design for games of this genre. Maybe WoW pioneered that interface. Good for them. If that's what's currently accepted in the MMORPG genre as the standard interface, I see nothing wrong with UO adopting that standard. Actually, I think that's the right thing to do, especially if they hope to attract players from games like WoW who are used to that interface.

The UI isn't what sells UO. It's the very rich world and autonomous nature of character development that sells UO.

In the past, though, I think a lot of people refused to try UO because the graphics sucked and the UI was awful. Maybe those people will try it now that it has a modern UI similar to what they're used to.

And honestly, as a 9+ year UO vet, the new UI is growing on me.

Re: I installed I tested and I am not installing the Final Release.

We recently upgraded my graphics card so I could play Oblivion. It's an excellent card. I have a brand new flat screen 21 inch monitor.. there is nothing wrong with my system that makes the screen blurry. It just is hard to distringuish. Zooming is not for everyone and we shouldn't have to zoom to see things. The definition on the graphics is in question here to me.. not my system which does fine in many varied high definition graphics. My eyes may not be the best, but they are not the issue here. I play KR and come away with sore eyes from leaning in trying to see it better. If it's this bad on my nice new monitor, I can't imagine how icky it looks on a low end or older one.

Re: I installed I tested and I am not installing the Final Release.

I've just started back in the game after many years away and have tried the KR client a bit.

The blurriness that many are seeing is probably un-finished textures I would bet, placeholders that will get replaced as the art team has time to get to them. I can't see them making some nice and fairly high-res textures while leaving others that look very low-res.

As for the interface I like some things and dislike others. I really like the hotbar system as I've been using it since EQ so it's like second nature to have them available. I really dislike the inventory system though. I enjoyed keeping my backpack, bank, storage and the like all organized just the way I wanted it. Now you can't even keep something in the same square since as soon as you use it they move to the end, which I personally find HIGHLY annoying.

Re: I installed I tested and I am not installing the Final Release.

*Looks at watch...* Hm...still patching...

Concerning what Kit said about upgrading her graphics card, I'm currently using a GEForce 6600, and things seem fine for me, I can only imagine how awesome an upgrade would make things look. I guess being more a casual gamer, and that I've been only messing around with the KR beta client for a week or two, and really have barely left my house in game (can never quite commit to a design!), I'm still getting reacquainted with the interface. I definitely see the potential in this overhaul. Here's just a few things that are a bit frustrating in game that maybe some of you have or have not encountered:

- I've had few instances of actual "crashes", however, what consistently happens about a half hour to an hour of play time, is that my pointer will disappear and become a "ghost" where it's not visible but i can still highlight things on the UI as if it were there. Nothing a quick restart of the client won't fix, but still annoying.

- House customization. IMO i know this is definitely an area where a lot of fixes have been implimented in previous patches. When customizing, or even when not, the tiles of the first floor all default to that dead grass look. In customization mode, the eyedropper tool will bring back the display of the original tiles, but don't know of a quick fix on doing it out of customization mode. Weird!

- "Say" Macros not having enough text space. This one had been mentioned in another thread, and is the biggest pain when really needing to make an "i wish to lock this down" macro. It's also not that similar case in the 2D client macros where you just can't see the last part of what you type in; there simply is not enough space. Hopefully this will get fixed.

That's all that comes to mind ATM....ah! the patch is finished! Well, all in all, i'm keeping an open mind about KR.

Re: I installed I tested and I am not installing the Final Release.

Also of note on the blurry textures. Anyone playing on an LCD and running the game full-screen at ANYTHING other than the native resolution of the LCD will cause it to look blurry. This will be worse/better depending on the quality of the monitor.

This would also stand for your windows desktop as well. Most standard LCD's are meant to run at 1280x1024 and anything else will cause some blur. So if your desktop was set to say, 1024x768 there would be some blur that would carry over to the game.

Re: I installed I tested and I am not installing the Final Release.

I must say that yesterday's patch has me VERY excited. I played for over 3 hours straight without crashing a single time. (Remember, kids, this is BETA software! Not some cool sneak preview! It's UNFINISHED!)

The new brightness levels make a WORLD of difference in clarity (though I'm sure there is a lot of low-res placeholder art in some places, like emmortal said).

The dev team has addressed a boatload of usability concerns, such as implementing legacy chat options (where you don't have to hit the enter key to speak), and enhancing the new KR style chat to make it more usable (the SAY: prefix, and color coding).

Now that I am finally to the point where I can PLAY KR instead of just wandering around trying to figure it all out, I really enjoy the new user interface. It is so much more configurable than the old interface. It just takes time to learn all of the options and find what works for you.

By the way - emmortal - there is an option to toggle your inventory view. There are 3 views - the grid, a list, or the old freeform view where you put stuff wherever you want it (like in 2D). There's a little button at the top left corner of each open container. Use that button to toggle through the views.

I'd bet for at least 80% of all user interface complaints about KR, there is an option to tweak it to the person's liking - it's just that users either don't know it or haven't taken the time to find it.

With yesterday's patch, I am VERY excited. KR is finally playable, to me, and I'm enjoying it immensely. Granted, I still report a few bugs every time I play - but remember. We are BETA TESTERS!! Our job is to FIND bugs and REPORT them. KR isn't supposed to be a smooth and glorious experience right now. It's supposed to be buggy.

Go forth and find and report bugs! Let's make this a fantastically stable release when KR comes out!
