How modern will UOKR be?

taken from Thread :- HOw modern will UOKR be? UO Kingdom Reborn

Comment

I am curious if UOKR will be coded to take advantage of the new multi-core processors out today.

I have read alot about the processors and the general concensus is that most software today does not benefit from Multi-core processors as it is not coded for it.

Anyone have info about this?

I suspect any modern single-core processor is far more than enough to run KR optimally; dual-core would be overkill.

That said, if you were to dedicate a single core to UO you could run all of your background programs (and I know when I'd play UO there would be many) on the other one.

On a related topic, who tied to windows will the KR client be? (is there any reason why it should we expect it to have problems if run through a windows emulator like WINE?)

Having not played with WINE in ages I have no clue, I guess it all depends on their support for directx9.

Having played with Wine recently, I can say that it's support for directx9 is not great, at least from a performance standpoint. TransGaming's Cedega product is a much better alternative. Cedega does not claim to support every game, though, and the product usually has to be tweaked for games to run properly in it. To get that support from TransGaming, there has to be a significant market for the game. Unfortunately, UO has never been popular enough to warrant the work. Hopefully it will work 'out of the box' when KR is finally released.

I am hoping to update this document with UOKR information, when all the pieces become available.

I, for one, would really like to play UO on my Mac. The directx dependency is unfortunate (but, if that's what the team knows, what can you do *shrugs*).
