I don't think I would ever pay RL money for in game stuff, since I think the fun of it is actually working your character up so that they can get the things they need in game.

I'm not that bothered about other people buying in game stuff on ebay, and I can see that if someone did spend ages in doom or somewhere like that and they were just getting a lot of bad luck then they might just get bored of trying and buy whatever they wanted.

Generally I'm not a huge fan of the whole buying ingame stuff on ebay and similar places, but I'm not really against it- if that's how someone prefers to play it then that's their choice and it doesn't really affect me.

We ladies can be a bit touchy when we feel 'slighted'. My husband doesn't even play at all, not sure I want him to, since he would be needing my guidance so much.

But sometimes I 'feel' the need to go make sure he isn't feeling neglected as he 'snoozes' in front of the TV.

That's why I play more late at night.. no guilt that I am neglecting people.

I like the fact that there are those that do the buying and selling for real money. I have used that system both buying and selling. Not very much and not all that often but on two occasions I forked out some good cash. In my opinion, if you can afford to spend it and not hurt yourself in RL...food, bills, savings....then it is money well spent. Why? If it made you happy then you are good to go. I spend most of my time making gold...thanks to Deimos teaching me how to play without dieing (that often)...and don't always farm. I have quite a bit of artifacts that I stole myself...mostly low end stuff. I guess what I mean is, if it makes you happy in game and doesn't interfere with sound financial planning in RL then it is all good.

I agree with Kev and Thrad and others.
It's a hobby for me. Folks spend hundreds on Baseball cards ( damn I could payoff my house if I still had em!) I do and will continue to invest in my hobby no matter what game it is. Of course it's taken for granted, my mortgage is paid, kids eat, etc, etc.
I have never had a problem with it and don't see one.

Some one said something about exploiting asians with farming. Are you basing your pay standards on ours or thiers?

Just a thought.

I believe he is referring to the Asian folks that pay people to play UO just for farming gold purposes and then Xshard to more populated shards. If you look on ebay, you see alot of 20mil sales coming out of Singapore and stuff like that.

As Silverfoot said.. payscale??? We are always in a rush to jump on the 'exploiting poor people' bandwagon. But when our companies/people who are 'exploiting' those people pull out their jobs, where does that leave the ones who were managing to make a living for their families.????? If we base our opinion on American pay/living scales, the whole danged world is exploited...

im sure 5$ a week is high end on their pay scale. So did Nike. Does it make it right for our companies to make a profit off of that, and does it mean that they are not being exploited since they are making "good money" in their economy?

conversely, if american companies were not exploiting the weaker economies of developing countries, these jobs would still be benefitting american workers and their families.

Ask any tech support employee that is working at McDonalds after his position was outsourced to india or pakistan since they work for $3.50 an hour for 20 hours a day over there.

It's the same here, people are getting laid off from major companies as they outsource to India.

All good points.. There really never are any easy answers. Sadly, helping one person often causes issues for someone else. Minimizing the damage is what it is about in the long run. The real problem is Greed, not just corporate, but corporate greed certainly ranks right up on the top of the pile, since it touches so many more than the ordinary person could ever do.
