I find it a little vague on how to do this. I'm in New Haven and I get the quest to raise my magery but I don't have the ability to cast spells or write them to my book. I thought you could take a scroll and drag it onto your spellbook to write it in but that doesn't work. I am a Paladin so maybe they can't be mages?

I just am starting UO and as a lover of Ultima of old I would like to cast spells and collect raegents etc as I used to do In U7.

You cant drop the spells in the white book (Book of Chivalry) it has to be in the Mage Book which is Red and Gold.

You can have as much or as little of any skill you want (up to your cap) but remember that you have a total skill cap of 700.

The beauty of this game is the freedom that it offers. If you chose to you could be pops the paladin, grandmaster mage 'slash' fisherman 'slash' cook.

Just drop over to the mage building in new Haven and buy a blank spellbook and spells to go into it to get you started.

Thanks, I did buy a spell book, scrolls, blank scrolls and a scribe's pen-I have lots of raegents.

Nothing happens when I drop the scrolls over the corresponding slots in the mage book and when I try to scribe it says I don't have the necessary components.

I can cast spells from the scrolls but I have no idea how to get to the point where I can cast them from the book-of course I can't even get them into the book so that explains that I suppose.

I've been given the quest to raise my mage skills to 50 but that seems to be a moot point unless I can figure out how to proceed.

Hmmmm, well, if you drop a scroll on the spellbook and nothing happens, that means that the spell is already in the book. If a spell is listed in the book, its there; spells that arent there wont be on the list...

You cant scribe a spell until you have it in your spellbook.

OPne good idea might be to ask around for a reputable vendor house on your shard. Youd be able to purchase a full spellbook for around 5k...

I bought a spell book from the mage's (guild?) in New Haven and while it lists all the spells they are kind of greyed out which I assume means they are not actually added. I certainly haven't added any spells as you can see so am puzzled indeed.....

If you don't have a "full" spell book. You can't scribe all the spells. You can only scribe a spell which you already know (have in the spell book)

..aha....it was l mechanics....I had tried everything but dragging the scoll over the book itself while in the backpack which of course is the proper way.

Your tips made me realize that I could become a mage and keep trying though so thanks!

Ah, you are probably correct. You must be using the KR Beta client, yes? In 2d, the pages are simply blank if the spell isnt in there. Sorry about the confusion.

The "venor house" I would be referring to would be a player-run vendor house...not an NPC in a town. You will find hat most things yull need/want wont be available purchasing thru NPCs; youll need to find/earn/make them yourself or buy them from another player who has.

also if you can go buy inscription and magery from the NPCs... around up to 32ish you can generally buy the skill up too...even with the quest active...
