Graphics card for KR and WoW for Vista?

Can those of you who run KR and WoW without graphics issues tell me what cards you use. I have broken down and will be buying a new card in the future months. What happens with mine is my driver crashes (the screen goes black) and then it recovers, at which point so does the screen. Other games it just make the everything blackish.

Re: Graphics card for KR and WoW for Vista?

Hi Gieschen,

I use an ATI Radeon X1550 Pro, both KR & WoW work well on it.

In theory, anything that'll run KR well will run WoW well. That includes the Radeon X1k series & X2k series, and the nVidia 6, 7, 8 series.

The older ATI Radeon 9 series and nVidia 4 & 5 series don't play nice with KR.

Questions are... what do you have for video now? What OS are you running? How much RAM do you have? And what processor are you running?

Re: Graphics card for KR and WoW for Vista?

I have Vista and that is the problem for the nVidia drivers. I have the Intel 83945G Express chipset for my graphics, I think the card is prolly just build in video (It's a store bought Gateway). I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit with a gig of ram and a dual processor at 1.8 GHz each

Definitely read this post here on the UO Forums, most of it applies to your PC too... except the video.

I think you meant an Intel 8[2]945G Express Chipset... is it possible you transposed the 2 for the 3 while typing? The Intel site doesn't show a 83945G at all, but they do have the 82945G.

Intel does have new drivers (Ver. 15.6.1) for the the 82945G that were only released two weeks ago on 09.18.2007... if you don't already have them, you may want to upgrade to them ASAP.

It's definitely a video chip on the systemboard, not a card. KR typically doesn't like embedded video chips on systemboards. Two reasons for that... lack of GFX horsepower, and video RAM. Embedded video chips are use GPUs (Graphical Processing Units) with less capabilities. Also they don't have any RAM of their own, so they have to be allocated RAM from the system's main memory... usually 32, 64, or 128m of RAM. So your system may have 1g of RAM, but the video uses part of that (say like 128m)... so you have less for your system (like 896m).

Get a newer Radeon (X1k or X2k series) or even a nVidia (7 or 8 series) video card, with at least 256m of video RAM... figure around $100 or so. Double or quadruple your system RAM, 2g of RAM runs around $80 more or less... get as much as you can afford. Lastly even a cheap Creative Audigy SE sound card for $30 will help... sound cards are much better than embedded sound chips, they reduce resources and CPU cycles.

Hope that helps.

Re: Graphics card for KR and WoW for Vista?

Before buying a new graphics card make sure you know what type of slots you have.

Some old mobos only have PCI slots and not AGP or PCI-E slots.

PCI graphics cards are getting harder to find in Europe.

As stated above - any card which will run KR [128mb or better still 256mb] will run WoW liek a dream
