Re: For those of you running more modern hardware,

Hi, Vepl.

Well, the left eye will never be able to read again because it took the worst beating. The silicone buckle and vitrectomy (removal of the vitreous) and several attempts to get a stable implant finally were successful, but they damaged the eye so that right in the middle of my vision there's a blind spot blocking reading (but not blocking general sight). So the left eye has perfect vision except it'll never be able to read or see the details of exactly what I look at.

The right eye is a little luckier. It's what I'm told is the reason "I dodged the bullet", hehe. It does have one of the silicone buckles from the detached retina, and it has floaters that block my vision sometimes, and it takes me about half an hour in the morning before I can focus again, but it's completely correctable for distance and can see perfectly without glasses up to about 5 inches.

I have really good vision on right eye, then, close up.

Okay, so now here's a few stuff you should know if you're at risk of going through the same thing (call it teaching from experience).

a) if you get a strange but not painful blind spot in an eye, it's a retina problem. Go straight to hospital.

b) if you get a strange kind of looking-through-water sensation where everything seems to undulate if you move through water, your retina is detached.

c) if you see a flash of light and something that looks like a bug across your vision for a moment, have it checked out right away. It may be a retinal tear, and those usually turn into detachments when the fluid of the eye gets through the tear and pushes the retina away from the eye.

d) if they give you a vitrectomy, I guess it matters what position you hold your head (damned doctor didn't tell me that, and that's likely why I have the wrinkle in the middle of my vision).

e) if they keep fastening lens implants on your eye, and it keeps coming loose and giving you double vision, you may have an equatorial tear in the capsule that is holding the implant (it's hard to detect, so have them look for it).

Finally, if you're a big and tall person who's near sighted, you're at high risk for a detached retina. The reason I know this is because one of my retina doctors (who saw I was 6' 5") told me (i'm guessing as a joke but for real) like this:

Doctor: Do you have big hands and big feet?

Me: Huh?

Doctor: Do you have big hands and big feet?

Me: [wonders why an eye doctor would ask me that]

Doctor: Because people with big hands and big feet have big eyes, and especially if you're near sighted, the retina is stretched tightly on the eye and can detach more easily.

p.s. Yesterday I ordered a new notebook computer with blu-ray capability. it's expensive, but i plan to pay it off over a year and a half (no interest for 18 months). The reason I got it is that I have every intention of hooking it up to one of my 60" extra hi-rez televisions and trying that as a monitor. Thinking maybe the 40" for sometimes and the 60" for other times depending what I'm doing. **shrugs** worth a shot.

Last time I Tested the 3d client, and this was on an AMD FX55, Radeon X800Pro and 2gig of ram, it still lagged around semi busy to busy areas.
