I just read an event where like 100 mil was being given away.

WOW.

That is awesome in one hand, but on the other, its kinda sad for me.

My first years in UO were spent as an event host. I love doing it, its fun and rewarding and really can help the game out with changing things around a bit. Its safe to say I LOVE hosting events.

What makes this so sad for me is I remember back when a 10K first prize was enough to get a player to come to an event. Sure, lil reward for their time, but it didn't have to be millions.

Now it seems that the players are being forced to shell out millions to even generate an interest. IE - the only reason people will come is if you make the prize good enough and I must say, its kinda hard for a player who runs events to compare with events hosted by EA staff/event team.

Has the personality of players who do events just because they are fun changed? Do you really have to shell out millions to generate an interest in something you are doing?

Its not just the 100 mil event... it seems like most player events have to give out a million if not more to generate any interest at all.

Not me I would attend most events if there were no prizes, my friend who I think no longer plays used to always do some in fel (europa) we had a nice big seating area around the roof and a pit type theme where people fought it was great!! but she has been gone about a year.... there used to be abut 20 - 30 people most weekends which was cool, but not seen much around the last year.....

Its sad but yes, I think that is the only way to get the butts in the seats. We have a guild on Baja that hosts some great events and really tries to get the community involved. The 2 events they have done so far have been successful, but of course, people were complaining, that the 18mil prize wasnt enough.....WHAT???? I would have been happy with 1/4th of that. I had a great time at the event. I came in 4th place, out of the money, but it was alot of fun. Afterwards, we suited up and we started fighting with the rival guild.

It was a jousting tournament, where you didnt need to pay to get in, they provided all the gm armor,weaps, and there was nothing to lose, but people were complaining that 18m wasnt enough. Damn people are greedy...

I can't believe it, why? I would join in anything for free!!! 18m, jeez people are greedy!!!... I love the sound of a Jousting Tournament!!!! sounds like you guys had some quality idea's, just wish you were on my shard now!!

It's nearly impossible to throw events anymore where the event is the reason for coming. Whether it's an official EM event or a player-run event, the majority of the people who come complain about "weres my item, this is stupid, i cud be makeing more gold than this at swoops, id rather be at yew fel gate". Unfortunately it's a problem that makes itself bigger: More & more of the people who try to put on events offer more & more gold to entice more people to show up, so the emphasis then becomes more & more about the gold, so the mindset and the quality of the crowd becomes worse & worse.

The only ways player-run events actually seem to work anymore are if either A) They're "PvP tournaments" in which case only the gate clingers show up so the crowd is all on the same page and it's perceived as a success, or B) The majority or even all of the people who attend are guildmates of the host, so even though the event is labeled a "public" event, it's largely a guild event.

If you go on those other forums you'll see quite a few reports about such events. They're even to the point of counting harrowers as "public events" now.

What caused this? BODs, artifacts and garbage spawn like swoops. Shard transferring made it worse when it made it "pimp" to travel from shard to shard buying every single gawdy colored event robe in existance.

I'm sorry to say, but there are only so many aspects of a game you can renew with a new client............

You didn't here? The gold in UO today is going to be useless tomorrow.

The new currency that spawned on the rats at Brit are going to be the only currency around. The real power of the Black Rock is that it works like a black hole for UO gold.

With this new knowledge, I'd make an event where everyone brings all their checks to Fel, has a Battle Royale, and the winner takes all the gold, then donates it to the Zoo for whatever their heart desires.

Ok, I'm bored. But I'd chalk the rise in price per prize to the availability of gold in UO today. Why it takes gold for people to attend an event? Who knows? Ask the first person to create an event based on gold prizes, he/she will tell you.

It just seems that this constant rise to appeal to players to get them to come actually decreases the chances of a player hosting an event.

Unless I buy the gold on ebay (which is not going to happen), I can't give away that much and hold constant weekly events. I used to host a minimum of 3 events a week in my day... 54 million a week (using the 18m event as an example)... not possible...

Not to knock the event that the conclave is hosting. The thoughts here made me think. I have hosted many events for the guild. Think I will make more of them just for "bragging" rights.

Suggestion I would make is when a community event is made with a small prize or with out any prize money. That we do our best to show up to support the smaller events. Just a thought anyway.

I would actually think bragging rights would go a longer way, as long as the rights are extremely publicized.
