You're in new haven. Different NPC's purchase specific items and sell specific items. Just right click on an NPC and a menu will pop up.

A guy in the game showed me the merchants, I can't buy or sell items. There inventory screen just pops up? This makes me want to quit the game

hrmmm the just say "vendor buy" or "vendor sell" whichever you're trying to do. Some NPC's don't sell or buy anything. They're there for training or for making money escorting. Man I wish I wasn't at work. I'd log in a noob char and help ya.

Yea, it's definatly not "noob friendly"
I don't think UO ever has been, it's pretty much been a "Start here, find your own way" kinda game. What they really need is a PROPER offline or online guide, for people to reference. Right-Clicking to open context menues on NPCs won't work for you if you're using the Kingdom Reborn Client (people giving advise here mostly forget that new players propably using KR ;-) ). So try holding shift and then right-clicking (or a simple one-time left click if you are using 2D)
