Dual boot or XP only

Okay, I want some people's opinions and maybe it can even be made into a poll. Everyone by now knows that Vista is *plagued* with driver problems. Exspecially when it comes to games. Here is my deal, Vista is beautiful and has some nice features and I was wondering if I can get those same features for XP, like the scroll through windows, and the transparency and the sidebar. Should I just trash Vista alltogether and go back to my XP Pro, or should I set up for a dual boot?

Re: Dual boot or XP only

Hi Gieschen,

Personally... I wouldn't go back. A dual boot... maybe (if I really needed it).

Many of the features of Vista are available in XP... either natively or with a 3rd party add-on. The native ones are free; the 3rd party add-ons... well some are free and most are not. About the Windows Sidebar, it didn't really take off in XP like it has in Vista... so most of the latest gadgets are exclusive to Vista.

XP had the same issues when it was released, and didn't clear up (as usual for most Windows versions) until Service Pack 1 was released. By the way, Service Pack 1 for Vista is approximately two months away or so (sometime around November).

There have been four Vista hotfixes for gaming, performance, GUI, etc. just last week. I'm just about to post about a fifth one here on UOForums (it's already in the UO Toolbar in the RSS feeds).

Also keep an eye on not only on Windows Update (MS hotfixes usually come out a few weeks before they show up on WU), but also for driver updates for your audio/video/chipset/storage/etc. components too (those come out usually a month or so later on WU).

Again, if it were me... I wouldn't ditch Vista, but maybe dual boot it.

Hope that helps.

Re: Dual boot or XP only

I would keep Vista and go for the dual boot option. As Nok says there are third party programs to make Xp look nicer (start with Google Sidebar). I personally dont like all those features as they impact on performance.

Re: Dual boot or XP only

I run Vista and have since March, agreed there were some issues but I find it stable and no problem running KR (I haven't tried 2D) anyway I woudl stick with Vista depending on your machine it should be faster, check your vista index and see what it is, if it's say 4.5 then you should definatly stay with Vista (my opinion).

Duel Boot is kind of a pain... so I wouldn't recommend you do that...

I have never tried Vista, and realy have no need to...

Until its "required" to have Vista installed, I would stick with XP Pro... Its realiable right? It works with all your hardware Right?

Are you having any problems Right Now? If NOT, then stick with what you know works 100%...

Re: Dual boot or XP only

Vista had the same response XP did when it came out. new operating systems are usually just what they say "new" so all your stuff that is not "new" will have some problems. When I got XP in 2001 It was horrble! Nothing worked. I couldnt even use Office 2000. But by the time I was about to trash it and move back to windows 98 (yes I know 98) XP came out with updates and such which fixed eveything. Vista is a wonderful os and deserves praise. Complaining that vista sucks is the same thing as being mad that your 2007 chevy doesnt have a tape player in it. Vista is a new os designed for new systems and beyond (64 bit) Vista was designed to work mederately with somewhat older systems and work perfect for new and future systems running new hardware technology. Vista is the future and everything new will always not work until the user decides they want to use newer technologies. So if your older computer is having problems running vista you can either A. Wait your impatient butt for a service pack. or B. Buy a new computer.

Re: Dual boot or XP only

I guess your right, it's impatience mostly on my part. My computer is only about 6 months old, so I guess I'll wait.

Re: Dual boot or XP only

I find the best way to keep up with the times is to always time your new computer buys with new operating system realeases. My last computer I bought when xp came out and I couldnt get xp to work in my older computer so I bought another. Now 6 years later vista comes out and I bought a new computer. Everything works fine. it seems when we mix and match new and old components we get problems. nothings perfect. To get as much out of your computer experience I would say buy a new computer everytime new operating systems are released.

I know it seems expensive but buying cheap computers usually work somewhat as well as high end computers. High end being because they last longer and are made powerful to handle future realses of products. usually I dont like to go to the store all the time to buy a new graphics card or new ram or whatever. So I use a computer until my use for it is done then buy a new one. use it for a few years then get a newer one. people dont have to spend thousands of dollar on a super god like powerhouse of a computer. buy a 500 dollar computer use it for a few years then get a newer one. Same price. Its way cheaper and you get somthin shiny new every so often.

Re: Dual boot or XP only

I've been running Vista since December and absolutely love it. Sure, I've had some issues finding drivers (even recently when I bought a brand new, expensive video card that supposedly supported Vista) - but for those few hassles, I find it to be a much more usable (not to mention attractive looking) OS than XP.

Service Pack 1 isn't far off - I'd hang on to Vista and wait for that, and dual boot XP if you really must.

My $.03 (adjusted for inflation)

Re: Dual boot or XP only

Oh yea I forgot I buy dell because they are the best computers for the price you pay. One, five hundred dollar computer will give you about 2-3 years of superiority until it starts to be outdated. Thats only $150 - $250 a year thats reasonable isnt it?
