Re: Did I have to rename them?

I'm sorry it happened to you, but your character was in violation of the UO Naming Policy as found in the TOS:

Any name that is defamatory or attempts to defame the reputation of another account holder, an employee of Electronics Arts, property of Electronic Arts or Electronic Arts itself. The use of derogatory, defamatory or offensive content in conjunction with names of famous or important historical, political or religious figures.

So if my name was "I love Jesus" wouldnt that be not against the rules?

If it was just "historical, political, or religious figures" that couldnt be used, you couldnt even name your char George Washington or Winston Churchill. Thouh both of those could be construed into offending someone...Washington owned slaves, etc..

So your UO characters are real then?

People take offence to different things. Political correctness has gone crazy here in the UK also. Just this week some offices banned Christmas decorations as they may have offended other faiths.

No matter what you say or where you say it there will always be someone who disagrees with your beliefs or point of view some where. That's just life.

1. or any other names that would be offensive.
4. The use of derogatory, defamatory or offensive content in conjunction with names of famous or important historical, political or religious figures.
5. Names of modern era serial killers or anyone, or group who have committed crimes against humanity in the past 100 years, or any name that is closely connected with these acts.

Taken from a post on stratics. Anyway, I think Adolph Hitler would fit under no. 5 there, so yes, whoever that is can be paged on and be forced to change their name.

Let's not just say the US, I think it's worldwide IE: Muslims and Belguim newspaper cartoons, if I remember.

Always fun deciding where one person's rights end and another's begins. And with this world of instant and possbily anon communications, I see it getting worse.

IMHO

Re: Did I have to rename them?

When everyone was getting PBD's (right after AOS??) I got a bunch on new characters. The only ones I can remember offhand is A Prisoner, and Jesus Christ. Never played any of the characters though.

I'd say too many people are too easily offended really.

A couple of things are happening, actually. Too many people are too easily offended, and too many people are willing to give offense by using names that violate the UO naming policy in word or in spirit.

Other games handle this situation differently. EverQuest simply prevents you from making characters with offensive names, and updates the list of offensive names as players come up with new names that offend. Probably UO will one day have to go to this solution.
