Cross-breeding question

Someone said they thought that when breeding for black and white rare seeds that one must cross-breed plants with bright colors only. Does anyone know if this is true?

And if so, do you need 2 brights or just one?

Re: Cross-breeding question

from what I understood, both need to be bright, but it can be the same plant type.

Re: Cross-breeding question

It can, in fact, be two plants of the same type. This is how I bred for white/black mutants in the past, using resource-producing plants:

1) Pick the resource you want to collect.
2) Grow several plants of that type, paying close attention to which plants require the most potions during growth.
3) Pick the plant that required the most potions and cross-breed that plant to all the other plants at the appropriate time.
4) Put that master plant in a secure to freeze it in time
5) If you get mutants, use that same plant everytime you cross-breed. You will continue to get mutants from it. If the plant doesn't give mutants, unfreeze it and let it finish out it's growth cycle. Hey - at least you got the resources!
6) Repeat.

I don't know if the master plant theory holds across different plant types. I can only tell you that I have a snake plant and a barrel cactus that will give me mutants every time I cross-pollenate. If I remember correctly, I got 2 black per dozen or so cross-breeds, and one white.

Re: Cross-breeding question

again, point being they had to be bright plants (since brights must be used for resources)

Re: Cross-breeding question

i thought it was totally random, and that you can get a mutant from two plain plants if your lucky. I believe there is a 1% chance of getting a mutant.

I had thought that too but so far I think the only rares I've gotten have been from two brights.

Re: Cross-breeding question

I stand corrected...I went to an 'expert' (Jade, formerly of OWL Gardens of Sonoma) and she said she received many mutants from 'plain' non colored plants as well as from the brights. It just seems like the possibility is higher on brights than plains. *curtsies*
