Can someone give some noobie advice?

Hello! I am starting now and I want to know what kind of character should I create first. A worker to make money? An adventurer?

Hm, and I'm trying to get a nice server now but the packet loss is too high! What is happening? Thank you!

Re: Can someone give some noobie advice?

It's a little bit difficult to advise you, because on Monday 30 April 2007, the UO new player experience will change drastically; the servers will be down most of the day for a huge content patch, after which the previous new player procedures will be gone forever, and a town called New Haven will appear to teach new players about UO. None of us really knows what will go on in New Haven.

As a general rule, though, it's best to start out with a warrior character of some sort, because they can start earning money almost at once with not too much training. A mage is a good alternative, although you'll have to acquire some special items (a 100% Lower Reagent Cost armor suit) before you can begin to train seriously. At least one character with some crafting skills is very useful for repairing armor and weapons. After that, you can pretty much choose whatever sort of characters you can dream up.

Re: Can someone give some noobie advice?

I would say make an adventurer, money is fairly easy to come by from monsters at first. Lots of people will help with enough stuff to start out, especially on Lake Austin I was recently taken in and given all the tools to succeed. In my opinion starting out as a crafter could get boring quick if you are doing it to make money and not because you enjoy it.

Haha, I love UO man, worker/adventurer/roleplayer (says John). A warrior of some sort? Paladin? Warrior? And what about necro or mage? Not a good choice? Thank you!

Re: Can someone give some noobie advice?

I started with a paladin archer fortunatley it was during the book of truth time, he makes great money but I got really bored after a short period of time so hardly ever log on with that character anymore, I created a thief not realising the limitations of stealing and ended up changing my thief into a stealth mage which i have found probably my most enjoyable and profitable character. I also have started a tamer which frustrates me more than training fisherman/tailor/lockpick on another character. I spose as long as your having fun while your playing it doesnt matter, training a character is boring, playing a character is amazing.

Re: Can someone give some noobie advice?

I really enjoy the Paladin/Warrior (pick swords, fencing, or mace, they're about the same). It is fun to me to just run in screaming wearing my kilt (ahhh the good old days).

The warrior is a good starter character because the mage and crafter can be pretty expensive to train. Once your warrior gets some good lower reagent armor you can train a mage cheaper. (I've barely played my mages since AOS came out, my Paladins are just too much fun)

Re: Can someone give some noobie advice?

When you're able to log into the game after the big patch today, make your way to New Haven. Decide what sort of character you will play, and accept the quests from the appropriate NPC's. For example, if you choose to be a warrior, accept the quest for your particular weapon, plus Tactics, Anatomy, Healing, Parry and perhaps Chivalry. When you get to 50 skill level in these by fighting the monsters in the ruins of Old Haven, you can return to the quest NPC for armor, weapons and other rewards that are actually quite nice, and appear to be blessed, for the most part (blessed means that they can't be lost).

Re: Can someone give some noobie advice?

Be warned. Although being a pure warrior has its appeal, a pure warrior template is not designed for success. As stated above, Chivalry is the way to go.

This does not connote any alignment preference, it only confers certain abilities at the cost of gold and mana, rather than reagents and mana. These abilites range from mystical transporation to other locations, healing, curing poison, and additional damage.

As far as I could tell, at the moment, there is no fencing trainer in new haven. Start with swords.
