This past weekend my friend Angelica had most of her possessions on her account stolen and most of her characters deleted. She admits it was her own fault because she trusted someone with her account name and password. However, I want everyone possible to know who the person was that betrayed her. That person will deny it but that person is never to be trusted.

That person's character's name is XXXXXXXXX. He was assisted by his girlfriend XXXXXXXXX
If there is a lesson in this it is this, do not ever, for any reason, trust anyone else with your account name and password, unless you are prepared for the losses that may follow. Another friend of mine had a friend play a character on his account and lost millions in items as a result. That friend wasn't trying to be malicious in any way, he just was given access to the account and proceeded to take a character to Felucca who wasn't ready for it.

That character's suit wasn't insured, and the character was killed and the items looted. Which leads to the second lesson. Always make sure than anything you do not want to lose is insured, at all times, no matter where you are. Rogue guild members can killed and loot guild mates, a million and one things can happen to you in situations where you are sure that you are safe.

yea its real stupid that people cant work their way up to greatness and riches like everyone else. it has to be stolen because its "easier" that way. i would also like to know what shard this person was on.

In a circumstance like this where a person has not only hurt someone else in game, but has actually committed a crime, you should be allowing him to be named. This person has apparently done this before, and will most certainly do it again if he has the chance, and by not allowing him to be named you are doing one small thing that will make that more likely. This was on the Catskills shard.

I understand the frustration, and am sorry for your friends loss. But rules are rules, and a part of the ROC for here says no naming. If you make an exception to one they all exist for nothing.

One general rule (not from these forums) I follow, "Never give out any account information."

argggg.....that is my home shard i understand greed is everywhere, not only in rl but in most of the games that i play/played. i understand that if there is a scam/dupe out there, people will find it and exploit it as long as they possibly can. what i dont understand is why people feel the need to delete chars when an account has been hacked/info given out. to me, i would rather give up all my ingame possessions and have my chars intact, then vise versa. aye it was his/her fault for giving out the account info, but for the love of god....i dont feel that he/she deserved to have the chars deleted. that would break me, i dont think i could/would ever come back and play again. im sorry Llewen to hear about this, and i hope you friend can carry on.

If they've committed a real crime, then I'm sure the proper authorities will deal with it
But, if someone gives out their account information freely to someone and that person then loots the account, as far as I know, it's not breaking any laws.
Now, before anyone compares this to say, someone lending a person their car, there's a small difference....you OWN the car, you don't however, own the items on this account, EA does

It IS unfortunate such things happen, but if we allow people to start throwing names about, anyone and everyone can accuse someone of something.

That's a fairly naive statement. There are millions of crimes every year in the US and in every other developed country that are not investigated, let alone punished, because the victim is too "nice" or too discouraged to file a proper complaint, or the costs of investigating and prosecuting the crime are prohibitive and resources are prioritized in other areas.

I'm guessing the law in this area is untested, but I have no doubt that a proper prosecution in a case like this would result in a conviction and I am certain that eventually it will happen. You don't like the analogy of the car, I'll give you another analogy. If you are renting your apartment, and all of the possessions in it, if you lend someone your key, and they use the opportunity to ransack your apartment, a crime has definitely been committed, and depending on the rental agreement and any insurance policies, the complainant could be the lessor, the lessee, or the insurance company. Just because EA chooses not to do anything about situations of this sort does not mean a crime hasn't been committed...

You or rather, your friend, don't own the account or the stuff on it.
So if someone steals said items, because access to said account was given out, then ....well, that's the friends fault.

Yes it'd be illegal to steal stuff from someone's rented apartment, because you OWN the stuff in it, but the same doesn't apply to a game account.

It's even against the TOS to share account information with other people to (Just noticed in the TOS)

But, as far as I know, it's not illegal in anyway.

No one has ever been convicted of any crime involving anything with an online game. Ever.

Wait, I take that back, one time I read somewhere that a group of kids were arrested because they ganked someone, but that was in an internet cafe, and the ganking happened in RL, not in game.

My point is, YES, lawsuits involving gaming incidents (stolen accounts, hacked accounts, manipulation, harrassment, threats, etc.) have occured and have never resulted in anyone being found guilty of a crime.
