Sosarian Traveller of a different kind ...

Dear friends,

since our dear Callum mentioned that you guys were hanging around here, I thought I would come and drop you a postcard. No, be forewarned, this has nothing to do with LoTRO - even if I played an Elven Loremaster for a while.

Anyways, I was telling Callum about my woes getting my plate armours fitted and told him about the big LARP (Live Action Roleplay) Event called AVATAR here in Belgium later this summer - he then proceeded to mention that you Aly and Garrod enjoy LARP events near where you live and I was wondering which on that was. The Vortex by any chance?

Friends of mine have already started going there and I was considering the same for this summer, depending on how well things go. Let me know!

Sincerely,

Carsten, formerly the scoundrel Venom d'Orsay

How great to hear from you Carsten, and congrats on the armor.I remember last I spoke to you,was not long after you had taken up the Larp and was looking for some one to make armor for you.

Looks like you found the right outlet.

Hope you are keeping well, and hope to see more pics of your activities this summer.

omgooses

I can't say that we have really participated in true LARP events for awhile. Mostly just going to the odd faire or two in the region (Elf Fantasy, or Castlefest) nowadays.

Oddly, when I was in university (in the US) I used to go to a LARP based on LOTRO. It played 2x a year and was good fun. (Have to say because of it, there were certain scenes then in the movies that I felt bored with "been there, did that"...)

Also used to take part in the Bristol Rennaissance Faire in the US as well for several years.

But here, in NL, hmm, just never really managed to find a group for it that I was comfortable with, not to mention the language barriers etc upon occasion that I ran into. oh, and no car anymore makes it a little difficult getting to some of the locations! (I know I know excuses excuses... but I also need a group where I don't feel like I'm ancient and all the rest are kids!)

Re: Sosarian Traveller of a different kind ...

Well, I can't really do anything about the language barrier. I have troubles in Dutch myself, especially role-playing, but I did notice that my spoken Dutch got better through LARP ... practice, I guess. Besides, most people are friendly enough to speak to you in English.

It depends on the LARP as well, but some of them even differentiate between racial languages - Common = Dutch, Elven = English, Dwarven = German, etc.

Here's a few addresses for LARPs in Belgium and the Netherlands

AVATAR (Belgium)
Largest LARP in Belgium with last year around 1000 participants. It takes place in July this year in the south of Belgium. Players predominantly speak French, though I go with a Dutch Faction.

Oneiros (Belgium)
Organisation offering different LARP events throughout the year, based on different themes and settings. They even offer one for players 14 - 18 years of age as an introduction to the other LARPs. Many players/staff here come from the Netherlands as well.

The Vortex (Netherlands)
Large LARP in the Netherlands which offers various events every year. I have not attended this yet, but my friends tell me it was a lot of fun. 3 more events are planned this year.

There's more, but I know little to nothing about them. Anyways, if you are interested and end up going somewhere, let me know. Maybe we can meet up and combine our l33t role-play skills.

Re: Sosarian Traveller of a different kind ...

Thanks, will have to look into some of them then.
Perhaps we chould see about joining up at the Elf Fantasy Faire or something like that first? I think that's coming up relatively soon tho...

Besides, still need to get Garod some better pants for that outfit... he just got the boots finally.

and by request of Tabbitha, a slightly larger picture of us from last year (please note, I've cut VanQa and daughter out of pic, for privacy for her and her RL daughter and so on... (unless I have permission..) so that's why it might look a little funky)

Re: Sosarian Traveller of a different kind ...

Yup, I did, well, at least my dress...

Garod's is "store-bought" by a German tailor who specializes in this sort. Very much like the guy's work since he does some real quality stuff, and keeps to historic type material and styles, so it doesn't look so cheesy (like some I've seen that was bought). The fit was good as well, as unfortunately very often "store-bought" period clothing doesn't fit correctly as it should unless it is very basic tunic-wear.

And I just couldn't bring myself to face a sewing machine to help him out And fitting into that dress was difficult! I'd gained a lot of weight since it had been made

Re: Sosarian Traveller of a different kind ...

Well, I said yesterday in game that it was too short notice, but I realise it is only 2 hours drive away. I will look into it and maybe we can make it on Saturday. It depends on someone getting back to me with something I tried to organise all week. If that does not happen, we'll gladly join you guys for a Mini Elf Fantasy House of Sosarian Travellers Meet - not sure if I'll be able to appear in the proper getup though.

Re: Sosarian Traveller of a different kind ...

And the verdict is in - not going to Germany but rather attending the Elf Fantasy Fair on Saturday. So Aly and Garrod, can you make it?
