Choosing a server

Shard Selection

Your first decision will be which shard to select. There are several variables to be taken into account, such as time zone, play style preference (role play, enjoy the game, challenge), the displayed ping, geographich location (plays into ping and time zone), and server population. We suggest asking around for player impressions of server style in our server forum.

Europa is the preemminent role play shard. It is located in (drum roll) Europe. Atlantic and Pacific are the most populous US shards. Origin is a production shard that enjoys first experience of all game changes, as a buffer. It is rather unpopulated. Siege Perilous and Mugen are special shards, with their own rule sets.

Ping is the speed of your connection to the server. It is affected by the number of switches between your computer and the server. The LOWER the number, the faster you will move in game. For some troubleshooting , click here.

Packet loss is the % of packets dropped. LOWER is better.

Re: Getting started FAQ's

Race Properties

When creating a character which race should I be? Hopefully the information below will help you on your decision. Note, that there are quests that can change your character from human to elf and vice versa.

Human Properties
  1. +60 stones carrying weight
  2. +1 increased resources when mining or lumberjacking.
  3. +2 health regeneration
  4. 20 base skill points in all skills that are below 20 points. Also know as Jack of all Trades (JOAT).
With JOAT, if your character wears all medable gear he/she will get a +3mr bonus (1mr from 20 focus and 2mr from 20 meditation).
Another bonus is that you only need 120 weapon skill to get -10 mana bonus off specials (for more info on this refer to the pvp faq). Most warrior temps are human for these two reasons.
Plus you will be able to cast low level magery and spellweaving spells with little trouble.

Elf Properties
  1. Night sight
  2. +5% increased energy resist cap (up to 75)
  3. Slightly increased chance of finding colored resources on a colored node
  4. Slightly harder to detect with the "tracking" skill
  5. Slightly increased chance to passively detect hidden enemies
  6. Ability to use "elf only" equipment
  7. +20 mana
Most crafters are elves since they have an increased chance of finding colored resources.
Also mages are usually elves for the additional 20 mana, since mages usually don't need the bonus mr.

Selecting your starting skills

Selecting skills and stats

There are many schools of thought on this. We call the end result of character developent a "template". Knowing which skills, and which level of skills, you want to finish with simplifies your starting decisions.
For some reading on professions, we suggest asking questions in the Skills forum. You should also do some reading in the UO.Stratics professional forums, and the detailed skills descriptions on the UO.Stratics main page (lower left side links).

One thing that leads people astray who are new to the game is the concept of classes. There are NO classes, per se, in UO. There are only skills. Many skills complement each other, but are not REQUIRED (i.e., you don't get them by default). There is no ALIGNMENT in UO. Just because you choose Chivalry does not mean you are a Paladin like it would in Dungeons-n-dragons. It just means you have more skill options. You always have the OPTION to role play a paladin. It is not a requirement, but a personal choice.

Once you have an idea of which skills you want to wind up with, you will have two options in the character generation panel. Advanced or templates. For your first character, it might be wise to select a template.

In UO, the default starting TOTAL skill points is 120, and the default TOTAL starting stats are 125.

Perhaps the most common starting template is that of a paladin. This is a wise choice, as chivalry gives you options of magical transportation, healing, and damage.

Bear in mind, if you think you made a poor choice, IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. Basically, it is only 100 skill points. Each skill may be raised or lowered at will. Gaining skill up to 50 is rather easy in MOST cases.

Additional information
For your first character, there is also an option through UO.com or brokers (people who sell UO items for RL cash as a hobby or career) called "Advanced Character" token. This option costs RL money, or a token may be purchased in game for Gold Pieces (several million) from another player. It puts your character at 55 to 85 skill in pre-determined areas depending on your selected template. This option is preferred for animal tamers, as that skill is notoriuosly hard to achieve mastery in.

*NOTE* When purchasing from a broker, exercise all due caution. The brokers in our links page are recommended by us, but this is by NO MEANS a guarantee. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably IS.

If your a more seasoned player,but unfamiliar with this type of client,you too can benefit from Lady Gwen's help.
For those unable to partake in the quest [ for any reason] this step by step walk through with screenshots, will still make it possible for anyone to learn the basics of getting started in UO KR.

This guide is the same what ever profession you make,and Lady Gwen leaves you safely at New Haven town, where she passes you on to the relevant guide to continue your skills.

After you successfully complete each set of instructions,you will hear bells ring,before you are given your next task.So be sure to have your sounds on.

Good Luck with what ever profession you choose,and be sure to check back to our forums should you seek further help.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After you create your character and arrive at Haven, Lady Gwen will be there to start you off.
[/right]
Congratulations,you have taken your first steps.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next you will learn how to open your backpack ,and move items into it.

You may find you need to click more than twice ,when asked to do so.

Open any crate to see its Inventory.
You need to remove an item to place in your bag,to hear the next bell.

Now your ready to start your first Quest.

The next section will teach you how to equip yourself to fight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once you have picked up the katana ,you must put it into your backpack,to do the next step.
You will know you have achieved this step,as the katana will turn orange[ this is the case for all quest items,in UO.]
Now its time to 'talk ' to Hogarth again and receive your reward.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now you are all equipped to tackle an enemy.

You need to head NORTH along the path to reach the gate.

Once you reach the gate just walk toward the light and you will transport to the other side.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now to learn to fight your opponent.
Once you have targetted your opponent,a ring of gold encircles it as shown here.
Well done,you have achieved your first 'kill'.
Right click the skeleton's corpse,to retrieve any loot he has.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next you are about to learn the important skill of how to heal yourself.

Then you will go on to your next opponent.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now to tackle a harder opponent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When you locate the healer,approach them till you see the message below

You will be encased in a shaft of healiong light.

Now it is time to find your corpse

Double click to retrieve your goods.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now you will need to follow my directions,using your radar map and head toward the gate with the electric field.
The gift I gave you will guide you safely to the other side.
You need to get past the Dark Lord,to another electric gate,to get out of Old Haven.
The Dark Knight Challenge isn't in yet - it'll be available in the next few publishes, though.
E. Jeremy Dalberg
UO Community Coordinator
EA Mythic
Now walk the short distance to the new town of Haven ,which you will recognise by banners outside
This is where the New Player Quest ends.
Follow Lady Gwens directions on the map,where you will find your next mentor to guide you through some more tasks,depending on your profession.
Dont forget to check back to the relevant forum on the Main Page ,if you need advice/help wiith anything,or go to the Ask a Question Forum and ask there.
Good Luck
Getting better gear after starting (AKA Swoop Scoop)
SWOOP GUIDE
Our own Rhus Rhaddicans has often handed out this advice: Go to swoops for gear upgrades when you start. I did this, and it is definitely a leg up. So, a guide is in order.
Access to Mondain's Legend or 9th anniversary REQUIRED.
You MUST HAVE POSITIVE KARMA click the link to see appropriate positive titles. Looking at the chart, you may have karma of "no title" or above. "Rude" or below, you will get killed.
Monster information courtesy of UO.stratics.com
First, as a starting player, you will want to obtain better resists on armor for a warrior, as well as better weapons and jewelry. Mage will want to obtain medable Lower Reagent Cost items to defray reagent costs. How does your 1k gold allow you to do that?
What are Swoops?
- They are Purple named eagles.
Why Swoops?
- They are non agressive, won't attack you unless you attack them.
- The area they spawn in is NORMALLY safe, with no agressive spawn in the general area.
- However you must be aware of CHANGELINGS . If you see one, run to the sparklies.
- Swoops have one of the higher loot tables, so they drop more items, and higher intensities per item.
This is how you will upgrade your gear.
- Swoops can be skinned for a resource, feathers, which are emminently saleable.
How do I loot them?
- Since you are not an attacker, you can only loot them after they go "grey". When the name of the corpse is blue, you may not loot it (in Felluca you can). When it turns grey, you will be able to access the corpse. The timer is 2 minutes of blue, 5 minutes of grey.
Okay, I am sold!!! How do I get there?
First, as stated above you MUST have access to Mondains Legacy or 9th anniversary.
Second, you must get a quest in Heartwood. This is called the dreadhorn quest.
To get the quest, you must first go to Heartwood. Go to any moongate, and select "trammel" Then "Yew". travel north west until you reach the center of Yew. Thanks to MERTH and ALLY for the pictures.
Go through the sparklies.
Find LoreKeeper Calendor
Now exit Heartwood.
Go back to the moongate.
At the moongate, select "Ilshenar" then Spirituality.
You MUST HAVE POSITIVE KARMA click the link to see appropriate positive titles. Looking at the chart, you may have karma of "no title" or above. "Rude" or below, you will get killed.
YOu are now at spirituality Shrine
Go North-North West, following the wall to the first cave. No dangers here unless you are negative Karma (pixies are known to fly down here)
Inside the cave, go to the right to the Sparklies. No dangers inside the cave.
Inside the sparklies, you are in the Twisted Weald. there are many creatures here, but ONLY the changeling and (possibly) the dire wolves are a danger.
Do NOT GO INTO THE DESERT AREA
Go north until you see the purple swoop bodies
Introduce yourself. :walk: You never know who will offer to lend you a hand in getting outfitted. Be polite here. Not required, but if you are new, friends are more important than ANY loot.
Item Repair
How do I get my items repaired?
Repair Service Contracts
One of the cornerstones of Ultima Online is the activity of players sharing items with other players in order to obtain repairs for their armor and weapons. A supplement to these transactions exits in the form of “repair service contracts”.
They will be labeled as “a repair service contract from a [level] blacksmith,” where [level] is the skill level title of the smith who created the contract (i.e. apprentice, journeyman, expert, adept, master, or grandmaster, elder, or legendary as appropriate). The higher the skill of the repair deed's maker, the less chance of losing durability from your item.
Using a deed
In order to use a repair service contract, you must be standing in an NPC tailor, carpentry, fletcher or blacksmith / armorer shop. Then, just double-click the contract and target the item that you want to repair. The used repair service contract will disappear after use.
Repair contracts may be bought or traded. Check player vendors for them. They are not available from NPC vendors.
SOME ITEMS CAN ONLY BE REPAIRED BY DIRECT USE OF THE APPROPRIATE SKILL. Items such as deer masks, hats, tribal masks, etc (mainly tailor) cannot be repaired through a reapir deed, but can be repaired by a craftsman directly.
Creating a deed
Players can create repair service contracts by using the blacksmithing skill and by performing the following steps:
Use a smithing tool as normal (double-click it).
Choose the “Repair” option from the menu that appears.
Target a blank scroll. The scroll must be within the blacksmith’s backpack.
The repair service contract will appear in the creating character’s backpack.
These contracts will appear in the form of a deed. They are “blessed”, in that they cannot be stolen (if kept in the top level of your backpack), and cannot be looted.
Blacksmiths will not gain any skill by creating these contracts. And they cannot be sold on player vendors.
Code:
Skill Level       Skill           Success      Fail
Apprentice Smith     51.5%        80%-90%    10%-20%
Journeyman Smith     61.5%        90%-93%    7%-10%
Expert Smith         71.5%        93%-96%    4%-7%
Adept Smith          81.5%        96%-98%    2%-4%
Master Smith         91.5%        98%-99%    1%-2%
Grandmaster Smith    100%         99%          <1%
Do it yourself
Players may directly repair their items if they have a crafting ability, by selecting the Repair Item button on the Blacksmithing menu, and target the item in your pack or on the ground. Upon repairing the item, a message will appear on your Blacksmithing menu, saying: You repair the item. If the item does not require fixing, you will receive the following message: That item is in full repair.
What is Item Insurance?
Item insurance ensures that you do not lose any items (ececpt for stackable items and containers) when you die, FOR A FEE. This is 600 gp per item, for each time you die.
Couple of rules to follow to keep from losing items:
1) ALWAYS INSURE NEW GEAR BEFORE HUNTING
2) ALWAYS SELECT "AUTO RENEW" in your paperdoll
3) ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST 10K GP in the bank, NOT IN CHECK FORM!!!!
Pet Bonding
What is Bonding? How do I get my Pet to bond?
DO I have to be a tamer to have a bonded pet? NO. All pets can bond with you, IF you have the required taming skill to own it.
From the warrior to the tamer, we all depend on these wondrous creatures to help us travel faster, escape danger, and even help with the hunting.
Pet bonding is a feature introduced to preserve our pets. With bonding, pets who die may be resurrected by anyone with the required amount of animal lore / vetrinary skill. Bonded pets will also recall with you, even if not ridden. A real boon to miners and their blue beetles.
Recently, another benefit of bonding was added. When you log out, crash, etc, your bonded pet (even if not being ridden) will log out with you, and come back AT YOUR LOCATION when you relog. This has led to the generation of several new tactics for stuck pets (log out, log in, pet is unstuck), saving pets (you die, log out, log in, pet is help is "suspense" until you are resurrected then log out and log in), and getting to hard to reach hunting areas while towing pets.
BONDING PROCESS
1) own the pet
2) Feed the pet
3) Keep it alive for 7 days (most people stable theirs). This time period fluctuates, so do not panic if it is over 7 days. If it goes over 9 days, see the below troubleshooting guide. If still not bonding, call a GM.
4) Claim pet after the 7 days and feed it. A "bonded" tag will appear next to it name tag when you highlight it.
Bonding Troubleshooting:
Help! My pet has not bonded after 7 days!!!!
-Did you FEED it first? If you cannot remember, try again. Some people advocate giving it a command as well, like "all follow me", because the pet starts to wander off right after you feed it. This is NOT part of the bonding system, just a superstition.
-Has it really been 7 days? remember the game clock may not be the same time zone that you are in, and can cause some confusion. It is not unusual for it to take 9 days.
-Do you STILL have the required skill to own the pet? This becomes an issue with bushido and taming skill. If you accepted the pet with jewelry on that increased your skill, then you MUST again put yourself at the required skill level BEFORE you feed the pet after the 7 days. Otherwise, the counter can restart, and you have to wait 7 more days.
Why are my Resists BELOW 0!?!?!?
My resists are below 0!!!!
Having seen this problem in game a few times lately, here is a trouble shooting guide for this problem.
There are spells that lower your resists in exchange for other benefits. They are permanent effects unless re-cast. Sort of like a switch, cast once to turn on, cast again to turn off.
1) Did you ever equip an item (usually a shield) that said "protection" or "magic reflect"? These act just like the spells, and lower your resists for other benefits. SOLUTION: Re-equip the item, OR get a scroll for that spell and cast on yourself.
2) Were you training magery? Many current training suggestions include casting "magic reflect" on yourself at level 6. SOLUTION: Cast Magic reflect again.
3) Were you in a party and someone cast "arch-protection"? This is kinda hard to prove, as you may not be familiar with the particle effect. This is a known technique that some PvP'ers (the bad kind) employ. They party you, cast arch-protect to lower your resists, then disband party and kill you. You take ALOT more damage that way. SOLUTION: (1) dont party with people you do not know in Felluca! (2) use a scroll to cast protect and / or arch protect on yourself to turn it off.
Where do I buy bushi / Ninja books?
The New haven Quest givers for ninja and bushido have a (currently) unresolved issue with no selling the books for thier class. In order to get these, follow the directions below. You will have to first get to the New Haven Moongate (south and east from new haven).
Where do you buy the Bushido books at and how much?
