Like where do Squirrels come from?
Well, the Daddy Squirrel comes home from the Squirrel bar one night, and the Mommy Squirrel is feeling kinda lonely... well, I think you know that story.

Quote:
Do you play Console games or are strictly a PC guy?
Pretty much PC these days. I was never a console guy, but in recent years PC technology has just so far outpaced consoles that it's really painful to see even new games released on consoles. Once you get used to 1600x1200 full AA, it's hard to go play something on a console. "Is that lump of pixels a car in front of me, or a warning sign?"

How would YOU fix factions?
Well, now there is a meaty question. First, they need to mean something other than "kill the orange guy" repeatedly. Territorial and resource control are some obvious paths to further explore, though the "set the faction pricing to 1/3 so you can buy up vast amounts of cheap resources" thing really has no drawback. I've heard some good ideas over the years, but I can't say that I've sat down and thought about the problem in enough detail to have a real proposal.

Second, it needs to be free of major bugs that defeat the point of playing in factions.

Third, it needs to be FUN.

Is there any chance you guys might be planning some nice changes for some of the old content in UO? Kinda like the 8 UO Dungeons, finishing off the virtues, making some of the towns a bit more viable?
Oh, how I'd so love to see that happen. Though, instead of finishing off virtues, I'd like to see virtues be more... virtue-like! The point of being virtuous was to gain super powers, rather the means were the end. I'd rather see the focus be on improving the RP side of virtues, than on giving players more powers for being "virtuous".

As for the old dungeons, while there are no specific plans right now, it is one of those things that needs to happen. They need some love!

Any plans soon on fixing the scripters?
They're broken? :-P

If we did have plans, do you think we'd announce them? Do the cops announce when they're going to raid a pot plantation?

Nope.

Hey, Wilki. Thanks so much for doin that interview. It was pretty cool to get some answers to some of the more personal questions in there. Kinda helps us remember that you are a player and a person too, not just a "Community Rep".

That comment completely mollifies that concern on my part. Thank you for the clarification.

As for the best way to limit the impact of items in combat, I personally believe that it needs to be attacked from both sides.
As I mentioned before, I am open and will reserve judgement impartially until I see more details. I was only concerned when it looked like you were leaning to the old "let's make a pre-uor shard and force everyone into it". While I loved pre-UOR, as you know we can't go back But as I said, I am again mollified.

Good items need to be craftable on a regular or semi-regular basis..
Yes please. That's all I want. I really miss regular gm suits being something you can pvp in. **smiles** really. I actually think that sometimes, "I miss gm suits being good."

Quote:
great items should be craftable after some amount of work (more powerful items require more work)
Your fisher and miner ingredients are a nice idea in that people can get the ingredients for good stuff without having to pvm much. The peerless ingredients in my humble opinion are problematical because they don't let crafters make them with their own skills, so even the person who spent ten hours and 100,000 ingots in the elf city getting a recipie can't make it without spending 5 million gold or getting someone else to get the ingredients for them.

The pearl thing and its matching quiver are fine because it takes ten hours to get the ingredients to make one keeper quiver. But the darkwood suits which are the best suits in the game can't be made by crafters on their own

Quote:
but at the same time, the amount of damage that a player can manage to do needs to be scaled back.
Fine, but truly that's gotta be the easiest part. I know that my 90.1 swords 80ish tact warrior held his own very well against a heavy hitting 120 skill talon bite warrior because he had good suit resists. Same char in 40 resists had no chance. Suits balance damage if you can get the resists and don't have to worry about stupid armor ignores

Quote:
An example I like to use is character creation in UO. When you're choosing your starting stats, you can't max out all of them at the same time. Instead, you can choose to be really good at one, pretty good at two, or just okay with all three.
**smiles** We probably differ on what we like. I miss the days you could ping pong your stats to where you want them in one hour. I just never appreciated making someone spend a zillion years to manipulate stats. But it's a minor issue, and I don't mind that we disagree there, hehe.

Quote:
That general idea is how player abilities should work as well.
Anyway, thanks for the responses.

I do like the overall idea of factions, just some of the things were not really well implemented. I never really like the fact that 1 guild in each faction controlled the whole faction. Which basically turned factions into 4 warring guilds, while making a ton of gold doing it. Also towards the end of my faction days everyone just became really really greedy. You try buying regs from a faction vendor they threaten to raise the prices again because these were "their" vendors. But I think Factions is a solid system, maybe adding some more factions would be a good idea....

So this brings up a new question from me. Do you ever RP with your character? Come up with background stories? Been part of a player run town? Fought some Bloodrocks?

Quote:

Well the thing is when you call the cops on a pot plantation(even though I am not sure there are plantations anymore, more green houses) they actually do something.
There have been a small group of us paging(even though I have totally stopped from now on and just go about PKing them) on a very very large group of scripters. I still page on the Gold Farming Scripters and the GMs do something about them simply because they are easy to detect.
But there is a group of miners that mine shadow ore, then turn it over to a script smith who turns it into shadow bucklers or heathers(can't remember which right now) and sells them to NPCs. Whenever a GM is called they say they will monitor them. These scripters have been here for the last month and a bit. All the same guys all the same deal.

So unless you guys are taking legal action against these players I don't see a reason why they should still be around with a couple of BILLION gold in their banks, just waiting for the next exploit.

Sorry for the mini rant, I have been marking all the mountains in Fel and monitoring scripters for the last 3 hours. Kinda getting me down the amount I have seen.

Anyways, thanks a bunch for the response.

Got a few more fresh questions too:
Which artifact did you get from Doom? I spent months in there and only got the Legacy of the Dread Lord which is fairly worthless(but I keep it for sedimental value). Also how would you improve Doom?

How would you improve the 8 original UO dungeons? I got a few ideas on this one myself, going to post them in the Feedback forum later this week I guess.

Any chance of a few more interviews like this from other Devs? This one was very very well done and I like the format behind it(submit questions for a few weeks then choose the best).

Well off to find some cat food.

I could not agree more with you ,regarding the Virtues being roleplayed more. However if the Virtue system was completed, those of us who DO RP them could use them so much more.
For example, players who have Veteran Knights/Paladin type characters, could actually need those Virtues to keep the status.
As GM of a Knightly Order,I would love to use more quests for members to achieve the Virtues, as an integral part of them working along the path to becoming a Paladin. So a Paladin would only receive the title after aqcuiring all 8 Virtues (displayed on their gump )

It would add so much more 'meat' to becoming a Paladin /Knight to have the system fully available

Haha - sorry to barge in here Wilki but there's really a pretty good story behind this...

We added squrrels to UO after a real life incident here at EA!

One of our lead designers was leaving the UO dining area with a rest of us, heading back to our building. When she went to toss some garbage in its place, a huge squrrel leaped out of the trashcan's hole! So there's this huge, mean and nasty ball of fury, hissing, snapping and lunging at her, defending its can of trash.

After the commotion died down - and the screeches and screams were still hanging in the air - someone said - "Dude, we should have squirrels in the game - evil ones too." While the giant evil elf boss squirrel monster 'Mogtar' remained a joke, his smaller, less hostile cousins got into the game.

Though i hear from time to time a person might meet one thats evil... oooWwooOOOOohhoo *nice ghost story huh?
