I think (hope) Wilki knows I have the highest respect and regard for him as a human being. When I was a stratics mod I used to talk to him sometimes when he was a stratics mod, and I grew to really like and respect Wilki.

He never, ever took joy in making hard decisions, and he was very compassionate.

That's why I hope that you and he and all other readers know when I argue against him, it is with respect and regard and not with emotion or disdain.

Nah, they can't make anything even close to that right now.

A smith or tailor can't make a pvp-capable suit without special ingredients right now without using high end runics.

First, thanks for doing and presenting the well done interview.

To Wilki, I have a question:

You mentioned that you chose not to adapt to skill scroll, stat scroll and item changes over the last half decade. In my opinion that makes you unqualified to take what we have away because you didn't invest the time into adapting.

No, what I said was that I refused to make item collection my main goal.

Nearly all of my characters are scrolled out, including around 10 that have +25 stat scrolls applied to them. Considering that I obtained them all myself, I feel I'm qualified to talk about combat in UO, both PvM and PvP.

As for the best way to limit the impact of items in combat, I personally believe that it needs to be attacked from both sides. Good items need to be craftable on a regular or semi-regular basis, great items should be craftable after some amount of work (more powerful items require more work), but at the same time, the amount of damage that a player can manage to do needs to be scaled back.

An example I like to use is character creation in UO. When you're choosing your starting stats, you can't max out all of them at the same time. Instead, you can choose to be really good at one, pretty good at two, or just okay with all three. That general idea is how player abilities should work as well.

Re: UOForums Interview with Wilki

We all wanna know stuff Wilki.
Like where do Squirrels come from?

Do you play Console games or are strictly a PC guy?

If you do play console games, how has the PS3 delay affected your life? LOL j/k

How would YOU fix factions?

Is there any chance you guys might be planning some nice changes for some of the old content in UO? Kinda like the 8 UO Dungeons, finishing off the virtues, making some of the towns a bit more viable?

Any plans soon on fixing the scripters?

I am half asleep right now so last question:
Know any good "wake me up" pills???

Well, the Daddy Squirrel comes home from the Squirrel bar one night, and the Mommy Squirrel is feeling kinda lonely... well, I think you know that story.

Pretty much PC these days. I was never a console guy, but in recent years PC technology has just so far outpaced consoles that it's really painful to see even new games released on consoles. Once you get used to 1600x1200 full AA, it's hard to go play something on a console. "Is that lump of pixels a car in front of me, or a warning sign?"

Looks at the Yahoo stock counter...

*is sad*

Well, now there is a meaty question. First, they need to mean something other than "kill the orange guy" repeatedly. Territorial and resource control are some obvious paths to further explore, though the "set the faction pricing to 1/3 so you can buy up vast amounts of cheap resources" thing really has no drawback. I've heard some good ideas over the years, but I can't say that I've sat down and thought about the problem in enough detail to have a real proposal.

Second, it needs to be free of major bugs that defeat the point of playing in factions.

Third, it needs to be FUN.

Oh, how I'd so love to see that happen. Though, instead of finishing off virtues, I'd like to see virtues be more... virtue-like! The point of being virtuous was to gain super powers, rather the means were the end. I'd rather see the focus be on improving the RP side of virtues, than on giving players more powers for being "virtuous".

As for the old dungeons, while there are no specific plans right now, it is one of those things that needs to happen. They need some love!

They're broken? :-P

If we did have plans, do you think we'd announce them? Do the cops announce when they're going to raid a pot plantation?

Nope.

Hey, Wilki. Thanks so much for doin that interview. It was pretty cool to get some answers to some of the more personal questions in there. Kinda helps us remember that you are a player and a person too, not just a "Community Rep".
