The more she works it, in the long run she'll be sooo much better off.
Coming right out of the operation it's really amazing how much leg strength you have lost and motion. I started pre-op with a 20 to 80 degree range. Coldn't fully bend my knee or straighten it. When I was done about 8 weeks later, I was linping but had 0 to 120 range, which is excellent. Tell her to fight with the insurance company and have them provide this machine that helps bend your leg automatically while home. It was a great help. Another big thing is, get the weight off it really helps. Tell her not to be surprised when they come in the day after the OP and tell you you have to get up and start making some moves, it really is helpful to get right into it.
I spent 4 days in the hospital, then was transfer to a rehab hospital for 10 days. After that it was rehab at home and out-patiernt. Stress the importance of working it at home on your own, flexing.
Can't stress this enuff, if you don't do the work, you could end up wishing you never had it. Hey it took 20 years of old football pain away from me. Allows me to walk with the wife. Basically gave me my freedom back.

Actually the first thing I did when I got home was go out in the driveway and take a 10 foot jump shot. Hadn't been able to do that in 25 years. Not something I'd recomend, but something I needed to get out of my system Off course the wife gave me an earful, but she's been doing that for 30 odd years

Hey if you have any questions give me a yell, glad to help you all thru it.

Se'an

BTW - I didn't want to sound over harsh about the pain, but it's a reality and it goes away. If she does it right she should be limp free in about a year.
My mom had been complaining for a few years about her knee and finally got in to see a specialist and he told her during their 1st meeting she needed this surgery (which freaked me out because he was pushing it). He said it will give her freedom back and we've been doing interactive videos on the net about the surgery. My problems with my mom.......
She's dramatic and stubborn and I can it being very eventful :cheesy: She has Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Polymyositis so I know this is going to hurt her to move so much, but more improtantly. She is on a medicine (Why I can't think of it now is beyond me but they give it as Chemo for cancer patients). Basically it shuts her immune system down. This is a major deal for us and she is taking it fine but I am not because as sick as she is, she still doesn't take as good of care of herself as she should. She also takes High doses of prednisone for her polymyositis. With out it, she can't walk, chew, swallow etc. and she has to come off it for a few weeks for this surgery. I just see it setting her up for something horrible. balalalahlaahalhalhhhhhhhhhhh Now I'm getting worked up. I am probably getting more worked up then I need to be, I hope it will go great. I am just worried.

Re: This Wednesday

Aye, definately a more complicated situation. And once you have it, you always have to be aware of infections. Something as simple as going to the dentist, I have to take anti-biotics before and after.
Not to stick my nose in too far, but did she get a second opinion, especially with all the other added stuff. TRhe Dr. is right it will give her more mobility, but ONLY if you work the rehab.
Again I'm here if you need me to sound off, but I am brutally honest about this stuff.

Se'an

WOW, time to go to bed. See ya on the morrow.

My moms diseases or knee surgery??? What do I need to know about possible infections later???

She is stubborn, she's been complaining so long to finally have some one acknowledge her pain she's all gun ho for it. She really does have a hard time getting around and I moved home to help take care of her because she was falling all the time, blacking out etc. But now that we know about the polymyositis she's been much better.

It's a good thing your not quiting, otherwise you'll end up in public education eating taco bell all day! Wait, that's mine and Dips version of Paradise, well at least the taco bell part.

Re: This Wednesday

arthritis and medial mcmurray's is what's wrong with the knee, as for pain, when the doc did arthroscopic (sp) on it since nothing could be found with mri, all the doc did was remove the scar tissue i had, as for the pain meds, with the pain i was living with before that, i didn't need to take them as it didn't hurt as much as walking, or bending on it did, unfortunately, it's starting back up again, but the pain isn't as bad as it was before. at least not yet that is, but since i work in a metal cutting factory, i'm moving loads of upwards 90 lbs sometimes, fortunatly, most of the time we can use fork lifts and stuff, but the problem is when i'm getting off the tow motor, knee almost crumples on me sometimes, but hey, i'm not that worried, will wait til it gets to what it was before i do anything.

and snuggs, don't worry bout hurting me with hitting, i have a high tolerance for pain after all
