Question a newbie tamer/mage needs help...

I've got so tired of people telling me that mages can't fight, that i succumb to the ways of the tamer. I need some tips on raising my vet, lore and taming. i also found out that if i tame cows (my taming is 36) i gain .1 skill in taming. will this be like that forever?

Actually it takes a little longer then forever . Taming has been/is/and always will be a pain to gain in. You just need to decide to spend several nights a week for several months doing nothing but following the little animals around getting your gains. When you get close to GM or above you can go the ggs route. Until then its just a lot of taming. Taming and lore will go up with taming attempts. Vet and lore will go up when you heal pets. For a new tamer it is a good idea to find a tamer who will let you practice vetting on there pet. Nothing worse then having your pet die and not being able to rezz it

Yes, taming does take awhile to raise taming. Mine's currently in the upper 90's, here's how i got there.

0-50 skill : Go to moonglow and tame anything, cows/hinds/pigs/etc.
50-65 skill : polar bears on the winter islands.
65-80ish : snow leopards/white wolves on the same island.
80-95ish : great harts/bulls work ok. I equiped some jewlery and spend my time taming ki-rins/Cu sidhe's.
95-gm/legenday : let guarenteed gains kick in.

it takes awhile... i recommend talking on the phone or watching tv while taming/releasing/killing things.

Ouch, 36...

My advice:

1. Dont worry about Lore, that is going to get where it needs to go without even trying. Youll be working Taming and Vet, Lore is just along for the ride.

2. After you tame something, tell it to "all kill" something and give Vetting it a shot. It will probably die, but you may get some vet gains. Once its dead, skin it. Youll get some plain leather that yo can sell to another player when you get a pile of it, or horde it for when you want to make a Tailor.

3. Wear and LRC suit, resists dont really matter so long as you stick to the friendly areas. Youll be training Magery at the same time (?) so youll want throw some spells either to help kill what ever your pet is fighting, or onto your pet so that they die quicker, you can grab the leather, and get another tame going so you can work the skill.

4. Take breaks when you get bored (and you will) or else Taming will become something you grow to dislike before youre ready to go out and take on the world.

5. Jewels, jewels, jewels. Once you hit around 80 Taming, youre Vet and Lore will probably be in the 90s or pushing GM. Find some +Taming jewels (nothing fancy) to take you to your cap so that you can take out some pets and start killing stuff.

6. If you can afford the +10 Taming and Lore scrolls, just buy em. At 110 Taming/Lore, youll have around a 99% control chance for a Cu Sidhe. Im sure that once you get to where you can control it, someone will be willing to ither help you get one, or just give you one. Dont worry if they say iuts crappy, a crappy Cu is still a killing machine. Feed it, throw it in the stable, wait A FULL 7 days, take em out of the stable, feed em, and enjoy the bond.

7. Now the Cu is a great starter pet. Its like a plant that can water itself and you will begin to learn the best way for you to play with you pets.

All told, thisll take you a while but it is so very worth it when youre done.

Now then, if you want something a little quicker and nearly as powerful, go for a Swords/Bushido/Parry/Chiv template. Youll be running down Dragons in a week tops...

We had a gentleman just join our guild who went from ~60 to GM in about a month. Gains are frustrating, but if you work it hard enough, you will get done.

Slowest. Skill. Ever.

Great advice posted here, so I won't repeat - except to say that after 9 years in this game, I'm having more fun with taming than I've ever had. (I've only been taming for a few months).

Around 80 or so, you will hit a slump in gains. Just keep pushing thru it, and you will get over it.
