Re: Eval Intelligence

peace is much better than para for taming. They seem to tame faster, and the area peace effect can be a life saver.
Peace tamer is the bomb. Paul was a peace tamer.(sigh) Miss him.

I disagree. I've heard all these stories about how being a mage/tamer is much more difficult to tame the mean creatures (rune beetles, mares, WW's etc...). compared to a peace tamer. However, I've had no problem taming any of these if you beat them within an inch or their life (thanks to eval) which seems to active their "fight or flight" mechanism, this allows you the opening to tame them.

As for my impute on having eval on a mage/tamer, I do, and I love it. I use it all the time to help my pets take down harder monsters, especially when you're trying to get that annoying last hit on them.

Re: Eval Intelligence

Jakar, I think what baldguy was saying: Peace taming leaves the pet with more stats and skills. Yes beating them within an inch of there life you can tame them. But they take a heavy hit in the stat/skill lose.

Of course I could be partial as I am a bard/tamer .

I too disagree. Stat loss occurs no matter how the animal is tamed, and I "doubt" (I DON'T know for sure) that there is any statistical difference between final stats when tamed with para or peace. Furthermore, on Cu's, I see far more peacers die trying to tame them than para's, just observing both in Twisted Weald. As far as taming speed, I'll put a good para up against a good peacer any day for speed in taming. I don't think there is a difference. Now, there ARE certain animals I'd prefer a peacer on...I'll never forget trying to para a Hiryu............ The last thing I remember was casting para, and then everything went black and then gray lol.

Re: Eval Intelligence

Tamer/Mage, eval is important. Tamer/Bard not so much. I don't have eval on any of my tamers. They all have skills that compliment each other. Like a Peace/Tamer, Disco/Tamer, Stealth/Tamer, and a Warrior/Pally/Tamer. Eval is not useful or necessary on any of those templates, epically to take Lore, Vet, and/or Taming along with your bardic or complimentary skill high.

My pets do the fighting, I'm just there to assist them in anyway possible. As a mage/tamer, then eval would be a must.

Re: Eval Intelligence

Hello - am fairly new to UOForums.com, though been playing UO for about 8 years. My response to the question of whether EVAL is still necessary for mages would depend on whether the magery is used primarily as an offensive or defensive skill.

If you are a pure mage, and your magery is your primary attack vehicle, then yes, EVAL is absolutely necessary. Without it, your direct damage spells are nerfed beyond belief. However, if you use your magery as a supplemental skill (i.e. Tamer mage, or Dexer mage) and in a primarily defensive way (i.e. summons, invisibility, Greater heals, arch cures, etc) then EVAL isnt really necessary at all.

My pure mages and necro-mage-spellweavers all have max EVAL. My Tamer mages and dexer mages have none.

Works for me!

There is a difference. I think its 10% non-para and 14% on para-tames. Not a huge hit but when you are out trying to get yourself the best pet possible, every little bit helps...

Just out of curiousity, where are you getting this information, cus I'd like to read about it.

Re: Eval Intelligence

I just looked all over the freakin place and couldnt find a single mention of it in official channels.

The one mention I did find says that its actually only skills that take the gaspipe on it tho. In the grand scheme of things, thats no biggie on a Cu as no skills would be over GM on a non-para-tame anyway...just a bit more training. Something like Rune Beetle would take a big hit through a para-tame.

Sorry to hijack the thread Snuggs.
