Okay following on from my monitor going boom. Seems my graphics card has decided it wants to go all funky on me too. I have a old Radeon X700 pro, yes now its a antique but it has been very reliable.

Anyways since ive play LoTRo ive worked it hard, the fan whirls away like the clappers. But the other night the whole screen went weird, graphics corrupted and after a while i lost signal from the card to my monitor and the monitor went onto orange light (standby).

Now i have tinkered and discovered that if i turn off all acceleration via display settings and i uninstall my ati drivers for the card i can get Windows XP working ok.

Im not sure what to do now, or infact if my card is totally screwed or its just a driver issue. I have already taken the cards cooling fan assembly apart and cleaned inside even remounted the fan on the cards processor and replaced the thermal paste. But all to no avail.

Anyways any of you got any idea's? Or infact if i had to replace it, what card is best to get? I mean im not loading so anything that lets me play LoTRo ok is fine with me.

Have you checked the temperature on it, if its overheating that could be the case, Or if its not making contact with the AGP slot correctly - I assume its AGP? Which makes your options limited, Probably the best AGP card you can get would be the Radeon X800 XT PE, 256mb plays all games fine, on high - Can ebay them for about £80

Using the basic standard drivers i can use the card fine, its when i try to install any of the ATI catalyst drivers (ive tried all variants) and even the omega drivers that i get problems.

Also im not sure what you mean by AGP. On my motherboard i have 4 slots for cards, my graphics card only fits into one of these. One is very different to the other 3.

Sounds like the video card is on it's way out . Seems like when it rains it pours. If everything runs fine with the basic drivers can you just use that until you can get a new vid card? Of course that is when you will need to know if it is AGP, PCI or PCI-E . I would guess the three are a white type connector and the one your video card fits is brown. If that is the case I believe that makes it AGP.

AGP is now the old type format and has been replaced by PCI-E if your computer is a year old, you probably have AGP here are pictures so you can see, if you are still unsure google it there are loads of answers out there

This is AGP, usually brown but can come in other colours! As you can see it has just one long slit Although most usually have a break like the PCI-E 3/4 down (no pun intended!)

Yeah i can use the basic Xp drivers for now, shame i cannot play LoTRo and other stuff though. Can only really surf the net now

Its a known problem with a lot of earlier model Radeons, its done it to me on two of my old cards, unfortunatley I failed to find a fix, I beleive Nvidia carried AGP into there 7xxxx Series

Also, A Geforce 6600gt would cope with it all, very very powerful card, and they produced an AGP model the one below would fit your system and for £52 (Around 70 euros) Its a steal, however it does only have 128MB of memory but you wouldnt notice the differeance

Ok ive studied some pictures of my motherboard, seems i may be wrong about being a AGP slot, can someone please confirm (or not) via the picture here that my slot is PCI-E?

IF that picture is your motherboard it is a PCI-E. From the "looks" of your graphic card I would say it is a PCI-E

Thanks guys, i really appreciate the help. Ive decided to just buy the exact same card again. I got one dirt cheap on ebay for £30 cant go wrong there i reckon.
