Re: For those needing something to do this weekend

That brings back memories when I lived in England- I used to belong to ww2 re-enactment group and we used go to various parts of the UK dressed in German uniforms and having battles with the Allies. Such fun

Re: For those needing something to do this weekend

well when i was an undergrad student i was in the Sealed Knot for a while (english civil war re-enactment group) as a camp follower. These groups are good fun though often a pain if you are a woman. Many of them - rightly so i guess - try to be as historically accurate as possible but it does limit the role as a woman you can have within them.

For instance i love Roman stuff - armour/weapons etc etc....even did a big course in my degree on roman army and frontiers and went out to Germany and followed the Roman limes and visited places like Xanten - but when we were talking to the Watling street guard - the Roman Group - at Kelmarsh this year it would have been absolutely fine for dec to try on all their gear - but me - i would have been lucky to try it on out of sight in private. So when i asked what the group had to offer a woman they said i could learn to be a roman lady.....hmmm somehow that just doesnt cut it ! I did point out that there is evidence for female Roman gladiators, but i had to concede that as yet there isnt any known evidence for female legionarries so thats me stumped.

and when i look back over the day - yes it was superb - but if i wanted to become involved in a re-encatment group again myself, the options are pretty restricted.....cooking/weaving that kind of stuff. Me - i would rahter be in the thick of the excitement and thrashing about with a weapon

Thats their loss if you ask me.
Check this link http://www.lothene.demon.co.uk/others/womenrom.html

Female warriors have been with us forever, even in Roman times. And if they're anything like my missus- God help us men..

Re: For those needing something to do this weekend

thanks some interesting stuff in that link you posted. Some of it I have seen before - the references about "women parading among the soldiers" and presiding over exercises is intriguing...open to a number of interpretations. The bulk of the Roman references are to female gladiators or women fighting with their tribes at the time which is well documented - maybe its a Celtic style group i would need

nice about the chariot burial too from wetwang *grins*. That's not far from where i grew up and it was a talk at school on the excavations at wetwang that first got me into archaeology....and luckily i was able to take part in a 4 week BM excavation on a chariot burial at garton not far from wetwang when i was an undergrad archaeology student. Fabulous iron age cemeteries in that region of Yorkshire.

Re: For those needing something to do this weekend

wow- very interesting

I think if computers hadnt have been invented my career would have been in archaeology. Been in IT for twelve years now though- too lazy to start a new career now

Hi Cherry
At school(long time ago) I was told to stay way from computers because Im slightly colour blind..so I did.

After six years in the air force and, later, going in and out of jobs, I decided I'd listened to a fool and did a course in computer programming and another in PC Repair/ Upgrade.

I went into supporting AS400's Unix etc etc..years later..

I changed countries and jobs and now I work for someone who is (like me) games mad..I sometimes cant do my work cause my boss is going on about game I love him.

I still wonder if I'd do so well in archealogoy though

ps..my wages are not so good but then I have no mortgage

Take care

Re: For those needing something to do this weekend

When i first met Cherry's player i was really surprised how little people in her field get paid. Its really bad considering how much hard work and studying they have to do.

Cherry - for a while when a bit younger *coughs* I was in the Englsih Civil War Society and they allowed women onto the battlefield - there were plenty in the musketeer sections. Was great fun , often think about getting back into all that.

History has always been my great interest and did think about following a career in archaeology, until I figured out the pay levels. Still regret not doing though and have looked into doing some "volunteer" digs.

Forgot about that event had been planning on getting along to it
