omgwtf vesper video game?

I had a great dream the other day. I was playing a video game with the FFT (Final fantasy tactics -- the second best game in creation for you uneducated folks) engine, but instead of the actual storyline, it followed a CoRE storyline! For those of you that aren't familiar with FFT, the battle is played on a chess-like battlefield and is turnbased, you can only move so many tiles, attack so far away, etc. Anyway, instead of the opening battle being between the Mercenaries and the Black Lion Knights, it was between Vesper and Yew. (When characters talk in FFT, a still-frame picture of the speaker appears with text next to the picture.) One 'scene' from my dream was a dialogue between Klion and Hanse (oddly enough they looked alike but with different hair/beard colors..) exchanging battle parlays such as

Hanse: Your oppressive ways end tonight, D'Gar.
Klion: You insult me with this handful of soldiers knocking at Yew's door? You old fool--
Hanse: At them!

And the battle commences, Hanse, Draxen, Lyonya, Phlebas and a few other notable -V-'s in battle formation, with their own cute little snes-esque sprites marching in place vs. Klion and his band of iron-arms

Basically, I'm obsessed with this. I want to make a game similar to the one in my dream. I'm asking if there are any computer programming gurus out there who can tell me if this is possible:

I want to take my FFT disk and re-write all the nonstatic data i.e. names of weapons, characters, towns, character appearances, script, etc and turn it into a CoRE game without touching the map/movement system/battle system because it's effing perfect.

PLEASE give me some feedback on this.

Re: omgwtf vesper video game?

One thing I've been meaning to get around to is re-skinning some of the armies in Medieval: Total War and possibly making a CoRE campaign when I figure it all out. Other people have managed to produce all-new campaign maps for Medieval II, and I imagine making one in the shape of Britannia could be an interesting feat. Could think of all the factions, of course. Yewish, Vesparians, Trinsicans, Magincians, Jhelomnites, Covians, Kaldorians and what have you.

And I'd make a Welsh army just for the hell of it too.

Hanse that would be amazing! I love MTW:II but thought that was incredibly advanced to do stuff like that?

Re: omgwtf vesper video game?

Depends on how good the modding tools are - the easiest game to mod is probably Half-Life 2 since you can download the full source code (tweaking the AI is probably the easiest thing) and there's lots of community support in the way of map editors, scripting/programming help and 3D modelling and skinning tools.

The problem is, it always seems like a really good idea when you start, but then you realise there's about 20 animation sequences for each model and there's a tonne of just hard graft involved... then the enthusiasm wears off pretty quick

Re: omgwtf vesper video game?

Medieval II actually has a very large modding community, and there are the tools out there to edit just about any aspect of the game. Although I imagine creating a new campaign map would be a difficult task, re-skinning and renaming some of the armies, and editing names (e.g. changing King to Baron, for the Vesparians, etc) would be reasonable.

The maps seem to be just .tga files - however, how that actually ties in with the movement abilities, city placements and so on is a different matter.

I'm ok at the gfx side of things - for instance here's an Evil Sunz banner (attached - in it's current form it's useless though, you'd need the .tga file) I made for DoW - but I'm not a "proper" programmer - I've done a bit of C++ and Java, but mostly I code for web-apps so it's PHP or Perl.
