Major ICQ Issue for me

ICQ seems to be buggered. I've re-installed it several times in several versions from 2003b to the latest and its still giving me stick. I'm going out on a limb and saying Vista Ultimate is probably borking it, so I won't be on ICQ for a bit until I can be fussed about rolling back to XP.

sorry to hear about the icq problem Hanse. Alternate messengers one way to
go..problem is majority of people on uo use icq so good luck fixing it...maybe contact icq and report problems with vista perhaps they could help fix problem

Vista will be borking it - older versions of ICQ (such as 2003b) require administrator privileges to run which might mean they hook into the kernal (although I can't see why they should) and 3rd party apps aren't allowed to do that with Vista; something that should improve system stability and security.

It could also be to do with the Vista user-privileges system; each version of Windows seems to be improving it's security model by going back towards the old Unix system that's been in place since the 70s... plus ca change.

You'll have to upgrade to ICQ6 which has been rewritten for Vista.

Incidentally, you can't run ICQ 5 or 2003b on a Windows XP limited privilege account either. So if you're running Vista under limited privileges...

Indeed Rhyddin, I've tried playing around with it to get it working again but I fear some recent updates for Vista have thoroughly borked it for me. I'll probably swerve towards ICQ 6 (I thoroughly hate Trillian and others like it) sooner or later, but I'm gutted about it because ICQ 6 has no mass-message feature as far as I'm aware, hence me using 2003b

I used ICQ 5 before switching to Trillian (which I'd not have done had a couple of mates not kept badgering me to get on MSN) and I'm fairly sure there was a contextual menu when you right clicked on a group that allowed you to message everyone in that group... can't imagine they'd have dropped that feature in 6, but you never know.

Trillian is much better, its great with no crap attached. Well recommended.

Always found Trillian to be a horrible piece of work with missing functions, poor options, alot of unneccesary bulk, an annoying interface and regularly has issues connecting to certain messaging services. Mic - as for the lack of crap attatched, last I checked Trillian also comes bundled with optional spyware and crapware packages.

I recommend going for the genuine article of ICQ to anyone. Accept no substitute.
