Question Surround Sound Systems

Can some one give me the jist of surround sound? I'm sick of not being able to hear/understand everything on the TV. I'm not sure if I should go for one for the TV or a stereo set for the computer.

How does Surround sound work? Are there wires everywhere? If you have a speaker set up across the room, are they wireless? Or are there wires every where, or do they need to be close to the TV?

What kind do you have and would you recomend it? I am not looking to spend more then $150, less if possible I was amazed how expensive these things are!

Re: Surround Sound Systems

The best option for someone just interested in surround sound, and not a whole sterio system would be one of the sets they sell that is a receiver/dvd player, comes with 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Get the powered subwoofer. If it isnt powered, it will draw power from the actual receiver and wont sound as nice. Also if your dvd player is not DTS(which I dont think they make any anymmore that aren't), then dont get a DTS system. Best is to get your stereo and dvd player the same brand too. Like if your dvd player is panasonic, get the matching brand receiver. In sync systems always work better together than a mutt system. So remember these things DTS, 5.1, and a powered sub, and you're set!

Re: Surround Sound Systems

What Bo said.

Also there ARE wireless speakers, but not in your price range, so wires are required. They won't necessarily be everywhere, depending on how well you can hide them.

Re: Surround Sound Systems

Hmmm...... thanks guys. I have a Panasonic DMR -ES35V DVD player and saw this one from Panasonic. My next question is.. it says plays Dolby Digital® or DTS® like your in the theater etc. Will it also improve the sound of just regular TV?

Re: Surround Sound Systems

your regular tv will have "simulated surround" if you dont have digital and if you DO have digital tv, chances are it will be in digital surround. I set my tv up through it and watch most things in surround.

Re: Surround Sound Systems

Ok guys next question..... I am having a hard time finding a Home Theater for my DVD Player. I bought a DVD Recorder already, I just want to hook up some speakers......Everything I find is super expensive and already has a DVD player attached to it (and no DVR (shut up Buddy!). Can you just buy speakers? Is there something I need to be looking for here other then the words "Home Theater"? I guess if I can't buy one with out a DVD player then I don't need to limit my search to Panasonic. *pulls hair out*

I also found this website that sells refurbished electronics. Would you ever buy refurbished electronics?

Probably. Would depend on the warranty...

As far as the first paragraph, you have a DVD player and you want to get that and the TV to play through speakers, yes?

You would need a Reciever and Speakers.

The Receiver is the thing that everyting hooks up to and then the speakers hook up to that so that everything plays through the speakers.

Make sense?

Re: Surround Sound Systems

Surround sound is awesome
I remember when I used to play freespace 2, the space sim
Nothing quite like capital ships blasting each other with beam cannons, mixed with surround sound

Re: Surround Sound Systems

Well, if you are simply looking for loud, a reciver and 2 floor speakers will get you there for about 200-250 depending, maybe less. Just look for floor speakers with 12" subs at the bottom. They will usually also have an 8" speaker and 4" in them too and even fairly cheap ones are loud as all hell.

As far as Surround Sound goes, thats more sound quality than loud. Depending on the set up of the room, you may need to put about a bit more cash for loud and surround.
