Question Sewing Machines

Hi Guys,

In a few weeks I want to purchase a new sewing machine. I always used an old Kenmore sewing machine (from the 70’s or 80’s). When I went to look at the new sewing machines they look so cheap & plastic. My sewing machine was metal and weighed at least 30+lbs. I don’t know what to get, I don’t know how durable these new sewing machines are. I want it to be strong enough to sew threw Canvas & Denim. I am looking to spend a max. Of $300 and of course would love to spend less if it was possible.

Any ideas??

Thanks!

Re: Sewing Machines

I have always been a fan of Singer and Brother, two great brands. The plastic never really appealed to me either, but eh, can't stop advancement *blech*

One thing to look for is the type of attachments that come with the machine as well as how it breakdowns around the needle so you can do some more intricate work. My old machine had a button holer attachment, my new machine does it all without having to change a darn thing.

Oh what kind of machine do you have?? I might go in half with my mother & get a more expensive model.

Re: Sewing Machines

They never make things like they used too.. they make them cheap so they burn out easy and then makes you come back from yet ANOTHER one >_<

I wish I knew a brand for you but I do not know =(

Re: Sewing Machines

I agree with Sio on Singer as a brand. It's pretty reliable and I've never had a problem with a Singer machine.

I'd also say check out the attachments. Depending on what you do, make sure you get a machine capable of it. If you do intricate work or embroidery type things, look at the machines carefully and make sure it's capable.

There are a lot of good sewing machines out there...unfortunatly I don't know any recent ones. I'm in the market for a new one myself actually

Re: Sewing Machines

Among other things I want to make some bags that I plan on silk screening. So I need to be able to Sew thick straps on to it. I tried to go to JoAnn's fabric to look at them and they have like a sales person there that tries to sell you some $1000 machine. It was just like going into a jewlary store!

Re: Sewing Machines

We just got a new Brother sewing machine (christmas) and it seems really nice. I don't think this one will do canvas or leather very well though.

I want one of the programmable embroidery machines!
